Where else can you find a great, thorough collection of surf songs one one CD? Performed by the greatest guitar instrumental band ever. Some tunes lack a little of the raw edginess of the originals but all are performed and produced beautifully. A must for anyone interested in early 60s pop culture and/or anyone who has ever picked up an electric guitar.

The Ventures are the exception to the rule in the catagory of releasing modern recordings from old material. On "Play The Greatest Surfin' Hits Of All Time" the engery is sustained from beginning to end with clean sound and no distortion. The only thing keeping this CD from an 'A' recording is couple of minor let downs. "Hawaii-Five-O" doesn't come off right without the original horn arrangement. They also could have used some cheerleaders on "Let's Go" because the thin chants and claps needed more power on the timeless high school sports song. This problem gets corrected near the album end by using the Go-Go's solid backing vocals on "Surfin' And Spyin'." Overall the beach instrumental kings do themselves proud. Sixteen of the eighteen numbers bring the surf to the NOW time frame. The lesser known songs such as "Bombora", "Baja" and "Diamond Head" offer the headset listening escape. Don Wilson, Bob Bogle plus solid support never come close to the label "Burn Outs." Two warnings from somebody who grew up with this stuff: To the purists and I'm one of them, stick with "The Best...Walk Don't Run" and avoid this album unless you're open minded. To the others who feel all surf instrumental music sounds the same after a few songs, choose instead "Rock Instrumentals:Surf". The different bands will hold your attention better. Lastly, non-surf suggestions: Ventures "In Space", Challengers "Around The World" and Honk "Five Summer Sories." Needing a New Age break for a ship cruise, party or Beach BBQ? "The Greatest Surfin' Hits Of All-Time" is as good a place to start as any.

I have been a Ventures fan since the early 60's and own several of their other CD's. This is my new favorite, with an excellent selection of songs and a great sound quality. I do have two minor complaints. "Walk Don't Run 64", while quite good is not quite as good as the original version and I've always found The Ventures version of "Pipeline" slightly disappointing.
