Unexpectedly Good Submitted on: 2009-10-21 |

| This album surprised me, at first I was put off by Aesop's very thin delivery, which took me a while to like, sort of like beer. But anyway, this album is unbelievable. A definite near classic, so many vivid compositions over simple backdrops. Some of the highlights of the album include "No Regrets" a nice story track, "Boombox", "Bent Life" with a great assist from C-Rayz, and "9-5ers Anthem" is a great testament to the average person's life. The beats keep it simple, which allows Aesop to use his diverse flow to great affect. This is clearly the pinnacle of his career, a definite must have for your collection. |

Rap ain't dead Submitted on: 2008-06-17 |

Aesop rock is so refreshing blah blah blah. There really isn't nothing else that haven't been said before, because we all know that today's commerical rap is ______. And oh yes, it's ______ true. Aesop Rock kicks a load of @$$ compared to soulja boy.
I think I'm going to keep this one a bit short. First off, just listen to the way this guy spits out rhymes. At times abstract, others concise and to the point. There's plenty of lines I can't figure out, but it's still compelling and fun to listen to. Love some of the insight that he gives on Save Yourself. Hip Hop isn't dead. It's just underground. It's a dead end to even try to save the airwaves from p diddy. I also like his delivery, even though at first I found his voice unappealing. But he delivers it in a indescribable attitude that I can't quite put my finger on. All in all, you must lend an ear to this guy.
BUt that's not the only thing you should lend an ear to. Just check out some of those soundscapes. They really aren't just simple beats or backing. They are full of strings (in a lot of different ways, like harps and those strings that back No Regrets), flutes, woodwinds, harps (check out Save Yourself), twinkling bells, and a bunch of other stuff. They are very slow and rather beautiful (that harp in No Regrets), and are perfectly balanced between the soundscapes and the rhymes. Blockhead (currently signed on Ninja Tune! You know...the label with Amon Tobin) does the most production on here, and this guy has skills. He does make instrumental albums on Ninja Tune, so Aesop Rock fans might want to check it out.
Hip Hop will live on. It's not dead. Listen to Aesop Rock. IT'S NOT DEAD. And I couldn't be happier, as many others are supporting one of the genres that stupid "rawk" fanatics will never get. |

An underground hip hop standout Submitted on: 2008-02-21 |

| Aesop Rock is the Mozart of rap. The kind of emcee an eloquent wordsmith such as Eminem could look up to with envy. While his nasally tone, awkward delivery and surrealist imagery make it evident why he has not risen higher in the miserable genre of mainstream hip-hop, this mans pen unleashes the most potent stream-of-consciousness styled lyrics heard. While it all may sound like a garbled bunch of nonsense to the uninitiated, spend some time with these rhymes and you may find that elusive quality in rap music-a gift that keeps on giving. Effective and understated production, albeit of an older-school nature, from this early album does not drown out the lucidly verbose and relentless word attacks. |

Its hard to like but its also hard to hate... Submitted on: 2007-07-31 |

| I'm probably not the only one, but I think this guy has the worst voice that ever touched a mic. My eardrums tend to hurt when I hear him. BUT, its not like I'm a fan of commercial(though I enjoy it from time to time), so don't go on to say that "this guy don't know hiphop" or some dumbs*** like that. He drops some of the most knowledgeable lyrics I have ever heard. Go ahead and try to breakdown every track, cause I sure can't. This guy is too advance. I admire his attempt to give us normal people a soundtrack and, for the most part, it works with the expectation of a few cuts. There are a lot of gems especially lines like I previously said. Not to mention his flow is just unbelievable, though I've heard better. The fact that this guy can flow such unheard of words in every day life so smoothly and perfect is what is amazing. Its just his voice, this album would have been in my top 25 ever, but its still a top 60 or so from me. Its no classic, but its well above average. If you can bare to go through this album, get it. That's all I'm saying. 3 1/2 stars. |
