The same formula with a twist

The music that the Distillers create is essentially the same sound that all punk bands (and by punk bands I mean stuff like Rancid and the bands that stemmed off or were inspired by bands like Rancid, the ones that pride themselves on being punk) are setting out to make. This is a good sound, I like this sound, and I could listen to 100 CDs that sounded like Rancid-inspired punk rock and never get bored of it, but that doesn't mean that it impresses me. Musically, no, this CD doesn't impress me, but why should it? It's the post-punk "we almost made it into the twenty-first century" movement, and this was pretty typical of it, and there's no shame in that. The guitars aren't all that impressive and are very similar to Rancid, except that of course, instead of Matt Freeman driving the CD along with his stunning basslines, we have a pretty generic bassist who shines for maybe five seconds on the entire CD.

What makes this different is obviously the singer. Brody has a shrill, edgy, and undeniably harsh style of singing, and it actually put me off to this band for who knows how many years. I mean, it's 2008 and I just now bought this CD and only because I had Christmas gift cards to kill. Once you learn to love the voice, and you will, it's a pretty straightforward good time for the 28 minute span of this disc. The lyrics would not be out of place on a CD by Brody's now ex husband's band, hm... am I mentioning Rancid enough, and they tell the story of the frustrating stuggle of growing up and making it in the city, which is a common theme among such bands. As far as speed goes, because speed is important to me, I like my music fast, there are a few songs that just hit the ground running with frantic blastbeat drumming and nearly incomprehensible lyrics and run at about a minute or two long. Those songs are the best but surprisingly forgettable compared to tunes like "Senica Falls" and "City of Angels" which, let's be honest, sound like they could have been written by uh... a different band *cough*rancid*cough*

I would say this CD is a good listen every once in a while, but make sure that you own all the classics before you go looking for it, and by that I mean all the Rancid CDs, Lars' side projects, maybe some transplants, time again, and other east bay/west coast punk bands, even the poppier ones like bad religion and pennywise. If all of that stuff is in your collection as it is mine, then yeah, spend your money on this. But maybe look for a discounted price 'cause it's a short disc.
Solvent is AWESOME!!!!!!!!!

I never acually bought this import. But I downloaded the bonus track Solvent, and let me say, It is so awesome! It's one of The Distillers' heaviest songs. It deffidently sounds like something off of Sing Sing Death House(the best Distillers album). For those of you that don't know, Solvent was a song that Brody's old band, Sourpuss, did. It's awesome! I've now heard pretty much every original Distillers song(including Cincinatti). I suggest you start looking for a site where you can download this masterpiece of a song. The only bad thing about it is that it keeps me wondering as to why it wasn't included in the American version of Sing Sing Death House. Oh well. I have it now. It's a great song!
Probably My Favorite CD Ever
Submitted on: 2006-03-13
Ever since the beginning of 2006(which wasn't really that long ago) The Distillers have been my favorite band. I am really glad I bought 2002's Sing Sing Death House first. This is pretty much the album that not only made me a Distillers fan, but a punk fan. I didn't get into real punk rock until I got this CD. What an album to start my listening!
I guess I should probably point out this band's(well this lineup of the band) talent: Brody is an amazing singer. Alot better than other "punk" singers like jorge of the casualties and other cookie monster screaming fools. Yeah Brody screams alot, but at least it doesn't sound unintelligentable, at least not as much as other screamers.
Casper is good for a punk guitarist. She's always thinking of cool instrumentals.
I really like Ryan Sinn's bass work. It's ALOT better than his not even noticeable bass in angels and airwaves.
LAst, but deffidently not least, Andy Outbreack. One of the best punk drummers ever. He was without a doubt the best drummer the band ever had.
I guess I'll review the tracks now.
1.Sick Of It All
5/5 They could not have picked a better song to open the album with. It goes from fast to slow to fast again perfectly.
2.I Am A Revenant
5/5 This is probably my favorite song on the album and may in fact be my favorite song of all time. It's dark, fast, and just overflows with perfect-ness (I know, dumb phrase lol). I love the lyrics, hell I love everything about this song.
3.Seneca Falls
5/5 This was actually my favorite for a little while. It's lighter and a bit happier than the previous tracks. Overall it's another great song.
4.The Young Crazed Peeling
4.5/5 This song was picked as the first single. Not quite as good as the previous tracks, but it's also really good.
5.Sing Sing Death House
5/5 This song is extremely angry. Sometimes I feel like a death house too...
6.Bullet & The Bullseye
4.5/5 Really short and to the point song.
7.City Of Angels
4/5 Probably the only song on the album that I can call overrated(since the album as a whole is pretty underrated). It's still good, don't get me wrong.
8.Young Girl
5/5 Really great one. It starts like a balled type song, then goes into a cool punk rocker. The message is a bit serious though.
9.Hate Me
5/5 It's be a crime to not like this song! haha
Anyway, this is a REALLY great song. Brody's screaming from the ceiling of her lungs. I wonder how she can do it.
10.Desperate
4.5/5 Good one. It's lowered half a star since the "1234 this is a war" thing gets a bit annoying.
11.I Understand
4.5/5 Another cool song. The subject matter gives it a half star.
12.Lordy Lordy
5/5 Perfect track to finish this amazing album. It sounds a bit country at times. haha but it's still awesome.

Well I hope this review is helpful. If you think modern punk sucks(which most of it does) pick this up, and you'll find a sanctuary.
A great modern punk album!

I'm not usually the biggest fan of modern punk -- most of the punk cds in my collection are from the late 70's and early 80's -- but I absolutely love this album. The Distillers are loud and angry, but are very capable of writing catchy songs. Brody's a fantastic frontwoman for this band, with her gritty voice and really solid lyricism. I saw the Distillers play a few years ago at Lollapalooza, and they play hard, too! Every song is good on the CD, but my favorites are "That Crazed Young Peeling" and "City of Angels".
