 Brandy's Grown Up Groove

| Obviously emmersed in marital and then soon-to-be maternal bliss the music on this album finds Brandy in an almost euphorically blissfull state of mind lyrically. On paper a concept such as that,especially with the cold heaviness of the world in the immediate months after the 9/11 tragedy,sounded like an excellent idea. Well,that and the fact that Brandy hadn'd put out any new albums in six years previous to this. Since that time however the music world to which Brandy belonged had changed. The street oriented sisters of the 90's,who were of all ages with their lean and pretty funky post New Jack soul/hip-hop style had evolved (or de-evolved depending on who you're taling to) into a world full of big haired,over dressed diva's who were really out to make an appearance both physically and musically. This was a very awkward environment for the sudtle,more genuine example of modern femininity Brandy had projected in her teens. She had the usual set up here,co-producing the album with Rodney Jerkins who if I may say so had done been a real asset to Brandy's excellent previous album Never Say Never where any worries of a possible sophmore slump were forever erased. But be that as it may sometimes that slump comes on the third or fourth album. And that seems to be exactly the case here. That has nothing to do with Brandy's concept or her strenghening voice,which are in absolutely fine and strong form throughout. As in much music where this is the case,the problems lay in the production. Well aware that computers and excessively heavy bass were a huge part of music at the time (as it still is today for some reason) Jerkins loads the already hefty idea of a 17 track recording with tons of overlapped electronic sound effects and one of the most overdone type of over-production drama one can possibly imagine. On an album with a mere 10 to 12 songs that is difficult enough but at this 73 minute lengh....it may be more than a lot of ears can handle on a pop/R&B recording. It's not in fact all too different from what happened with Jerkins when he produced Michael Jacksons final album Invincible.The title song is DEFINATELY the most vital and wonderful song on the album,featuring an extension of the sound Brandy had made famous before with it's potent,stripped groove and almost eerie melody-almost like an adult lullaby in a way. "Anybody" actually does a good job reproducing that sound with it's Stevie Wonder-ish way of mixing melody,funk and unpredictable chord changes. "I Thought" does provide a sound that is genuinely very funky in many ways but most of the rest of this misses out on being hugely funk or soulful,despite the presense of what sounds like a real piano on the later tracks,because of being loaded down with far too many studio gimmicks. The most frusterating thing here is that all the songs in terms of composition are uniformally excellent. So it depends on your taste. If the kind of modern production that permeates this album is your kind of thing,EVERYTHING on it will probably highly appeal to you. If you enjoyed Brandy's earlier material or albums such as Afrodisiac than a good deal of this might come off somewhat overbearing. Especially if you enjoy production that strong enhances overall pop songcraft. |

| The best thing about this cd is that it grows on you, and never gets old. This is my must have for a road trip. The CD tells a story; one song leads into the next - both musically and lyrically. This is a hidden treasure. I think it's Brandy's best work. |

| I know people's favorite album from Brandy seems to be Never Say Never---but Full Moon is the reason why I started looking out for Brandy a lot more and purchased all 4 of her other albums. BUY this album it's amazing! MY favorite tracks that really stand out to me are All in Me, Can We, Die Without You, I Thought, Nothing, Love Wouldn't Count me Out and WOW. |
