Another Excellent Sampler From Solid State
Submitted on: 2006-06-11
This sampler came out when Solid State was at it's peak but on the verge on declining. It's another good mix of different metalcore bands (which more than half are/were actually good), some death metal, a little hardcore, some emo and emocore. Some of the bands on here no longer exist, unfortunitly. That doesn't realy matter now but this is a good mix from some of those bands. I know that a lot of people realy doen't like Solid State because they sold out to emocore and talentless bands but this sampler is still good (this is right before SS sold out). Anycase, this is a lot better than This Is Solid State Vol. 4.
Vol. 3 !!!

The BEST compilation CD that Solid State has released thus far. Vol. 4 is out today. Can't wait to pop it in. Fav. tracks on the one (well top 3) Are 1, 3, and 9, but track 3 is definately the BEST track, but whoever mixed the song did a really poor job, because if you ever heard ZAO play The Icarus Complex live, you'd find out it's the heaviest song they ever did, but whoever mixed it did a bad job on it. Oh well, still the best track on this compilation.
Hardness.... i love it

This CD is plain Awesome. Project 86 puts out a great song, with a catchy chorus. Demon Hunter is really amazing. Evryone thinks they sound like Slipknot... and I guess they do at first, but after i listen to it alot,I realize that they have alot of differences. Slipknot's got nothing on Demon Hunter. I can't wait for their CD Debut, these guys are hardcore.
As for ZAO... the vocals ae so annoying. All those hard instrumentals wasted on those vocals. I can never get through 5 seconds of the song, and when i do listen to the whole thing, it goes nowhere. Still breathing... girl vocalist, real good hardcore voice, i like it. Underoath is good. Eso-Charis is awesome. Living Sacrifice brings on more of the hardness... they rock without exception. Stretch Armstrong is Really good, but its best at the second half of the song.Extol, lots of screaming, deep heavy voice, love it. Soul Embraced kind of has the same sounding vocals as ZAO, but somehow they put it together better. Cool Song. Embodyment.... ohhhhhh, such a good song. Listen to the demo clip above.... so amazing. Narcissus i haven't heard much, but the vocalist is real good and so is the song. Norma Jean... glad of the name change, it takes away confusion, but couldnt they have come up with a better name? Well if you know of the band formally known as Luti-Kriss, you know they are hardcore, and the new name doesnt change that. Tight song. Blindside is so awesome especially this song. Few Left Standing is super tigt (I'm running out of words that mean cool) and the song is cool. Society's Finest is a REAL hard song and it rocks. Soapbox is an awesome song. THEY DON'T SOUND LIKE DISTURBED. I've heard em before, and the vocalists are nowhere near the same, and the instruments are on very key points in the song somewhat similar. In fact the bass is funny at the beginning.

To sum all that stuff up, the best songs (in no particular order) are as follows:

Project 86, Demon Hunter, Eso-Charis, Living Sacrifice, Embodyment, Blindside, Society's Finest.
However, all of these songs are good EXCEPT ZAO'S SONG! Now go buy the CD!

Breakdown

Okay here goes:

1. Project 86- Spy Hunter
This song absolutly positivly ROCKED! it was heavy and and the lyrics were awesome! and the chourus you will without a doubt be chanting back within the first minute of the song! one of the best P86 songs

2. Demon Hunter- Through The Black
Okay now, imagine the awful trash of Slipknot(yeah i said it), and take away the bloddy violent lyrics, and put in meaningful worth listening to yet lacking some heaviness and you got Demon Hunter. Although Slipknot is a bit harder and chaotic, Demon Hunter puts in a great effort to do the same. Keep in mind this is only one song from a debut album that isn't even realeased yet. in my opinion, these guys (and a girl i think) are an awesome band

3. Zao- The Icarus Complex
This sounds like a mix between old Zao, and new Zao. With Cori on the lyrics, it takes away some favor i would have towards it. it would sound MUCH MUCH better with Dan's growl, but it is still Zao and that is all that matters. The guitars are heavy, but not as heavy as they have been in the past, but the song as a whole is still an awesome cut.

4. Still Breathing- Sweet Wound Sour
This is one of the best songs on the entire album. i read one review that said it was awful and it made me mad. This song is chaotic, sinister, and just plain LOUD. don't let the fact that the lead singer is a woman distort your view of Still Breathing. She lets out a gut wrenching " BLAAAAAAAARGH" in the song that will make your eyes tear, and the hair on the back of your neck stand up. Sweet Wound Sour is one of the heaviest songs on the album, and is in my opinion one of the best.

5. Underoath- Letting Go Of Tonight
One of Underoath's best songs off their new album. It starts out with a brief 2 seconds of harp and then full blast in to high-pitched vocals like those of Eso-Charis. Although i mostly skip over this track (cuz i have the cd) it is definatly worth while.

6. Eso-Charis- The Narrowing List
This song starts out with more of a P.O.D like sound at first then the vocals give you a nice high-pitched sound that sounds a lot like Underoath, yet the music itself, more hardcore than metal, is of it's own. Featuring some of Living Sacrifices band members, you know it has to be good.

7. Living Sacrifice- Bloodwork
Ah, the sweet sound of pure metal. Living Sacrifce at it's best. There is not really much to say other than sit down and brace for impact.

8. Stretch Arm Strong- For The Record
Now I am not much of a fan of music of SAS, I must admit, that this song is like an anthem. Once you hear it you'll wanna sing it over and over. It is definatly NOT metal as most of the other tracks are, but has a rightful place on this cd.

9. Extol- Of Light and Shade
WOW! This song statrs out with some nice hard guitar and then blasts into the first round of Extol's unique high-pithced vocals, and then switch to the low, murky and viscious vocals. this song is another one of the best on the album, with it's unique vocals and sound. the end of this song is just plain freaky! The guy speaks in that low murky slosh in what sounds to be Aramaic, but is most likely Swedish. no motter what language it is, it is just plaon freaky and awesome!

10. Soul Embraced- Still As You
I was surprised that Solid State picked this cut from Soul Embraced's albun This Is My Blood, but no matter, it is still an awesome song! it gives you a taste of each differant vocal style used on the album, and also gives you a mild taste of the awesome guitar work. it is also a great motivational song sporting these lyrics" Don't regret your life[talking to a beliver in Christ], it has just begun..."

11. Embodyment- Belly-Up
I reccomend you listen to the sample of this song.

12. Narcissus- 94
This song is again, like Underoath and Eso-Charis. With it's high pitched vocals and and over all sound, it seems lond of generic, but then again, I guess so could Eso-Charis.

13. Norma Jean/ Luti-Kriss
This song was...awful. You can't hear the vocals!!! i don't know what the heck happend, but it sounds terrible. much unlike Luti-Kriss.

14. Blindside- Act
Ah, good ole Blindside. You just can't go wrong with them. This song sounds much like there song that was on SS Vol.2. It has a nice hardcore sound to it, along with high sharp vocals.

15. Few Left Standing- Burn Me to the Ground
AWESOME AWESOME song. it wastes no time and plummets right into the lower Slipknot like voice. The music itself if awesome, it's metal vocals with a hardcore edge to it. a great cut for an even greater album!

16. Soceity's Finest- Knife Fight
Another AWESOME song! Killer drum beats start off this hard metal song. With vocals much like that of Dan from Zao, it has it's own unique musical touch. it has nice riffs, and as said before, awesome drumming. a supreme cut for Society's Finest

17. Soapbox- Gone
this is the only song i didn't like off of the cd. it sounds a lot like Disturbed who i hate. sorry guys.

Good Sampler-but little variety
Submitted on: 2002-03-26
I don't think that this sampler has nearly the diversity and variety of #2. My favorites are Project 86, Zao, Demon Hunter, Narcissus, Blindside, and, of course, Society's Finest. However, I find the album's low points to be Still Breathing and Soapbox. This is a great priced album. After hearing the new songs by Project 86 and Demon Hunter, I'm excited about their upcoming releases.
