A third tier guitar god release Submitted on: 2006-03-13 |

Yep, third tier is what your getting here. Alex Masi, late of Italy and obviously trying his hand at the time (80's) at becoming the next solo electric guitar hero of the hard rock scene comes onto the radar with this, what I think is his debut effort. So here is what you get
1) A very finely played effort with more groove than, say, Jason Becker and Marty Friedman's debut solo efforts.
2) A cool cover - ha, that's the main reason I bought this thing at a 2nd hand CD store!
3) Only one track with vocals. Which is a pity as it is a darn fine tune featuring Jeff Scott Soto (vocalist to every aspiring guitar god it seems) and if the rest of the album was like this it would certainly rate higher.
4) At the end of the day, a slightly more interesting meander through a bunch of tunes any solo guitarist could of done, but he does seem somewhat in awe of his influences given that the pressing I have has photos of him with various 'names' of the hard rock genre - as if he's trying to get some reflected validity.
Not essential by any means, and in any case his next album is more experimental. |

Under rated guitar player of the decade Submitted on: 2004-01-10 |

I just would like to say HEY to Alex and that I am glad to know someone as gifted as this man.I do think that everything is well executed and played as you would hear it at one of his concerts. I am suprised that a lot of people still don't know who this guy is yet, other than dyed in the wool guitarists , that is. I hope that Alex isn't to busy to start touring around some of the more well known spots in the U.S. that Yngwie Malmsteen and Jeff Beck have been frequenting because there is a market for solo giutarists.Play on Alex!Compositional skills and a flare for the obscure are amazing attributes to have and Holdsworth is another one of the masters that are found here.If I played guitar I would probably throw it away after listening to this one and bow in reverance! Listen to Vertical Invader too, it has a great drummer,( John Macaluso ),from Musician's Institute. This must have been a dream to record from a drummer's perspective that is.I cant wait to hear something new from this dude! Rock on! |
