| Patti's tribute to Ella is an effort that will continue to play in my household for years to come. I don't know who she was up against for the grammy but my vote would have been this one hands down. She Austin-ized a few of the numbers yet maintains respect for the lyric. My favs are You Have To Swing It, How High The Moon, Honeysuckle Rose, Too Close For Comfort, Miss Otis Regrets, and Satin Doll. I bow down to this phenomenal woman who continues to amaze me and surprisingly gets better with time. |

TORCHY & SWINGING TRIBUTE~BRAVO PATTI !!! Submitted on: 2007-08-18 |

As a long-time Ella fan who for many years was blessed with experiencing this amazing legendary singer in concert even obtaining an autograph on one occasion, I refrained from reviewing this collection but now must do so after having enjoying this stellar collection of rich & varied performances now for a number of years since its release...Patti Austin does Ella proud in this engrossing collection of awesome performances that the master herself would have been proud of and enjoyed!
Opening strong with the red-hot and riveting "Too Close For Comfort", it is quite clear that singer and arrangements are the finest and not only a great tribute to Ella but a special new musical treat for the listener...a loose scat in "Honeysuckle Rose" & "Mr. Paganini" make these classic songs not only a great reliving of a special Ella memory but become special new ones that demand repeated listens! A spectacular collection of Ella classics are all done with great arrangements featuring a huge cast of stellar musicians arranged and conducted by Patrick Williams with vocals from Patti Austin that are inspired and amazing...anyone who loves a great song and a great singer in peak form will find this collection a must have! "Miss Otis Regrets" is a gospel-soul masterpiece with a riveting & sublime vocal making this version a definitive & deeply moving experience while echos of Ella make for a fine and satisfying "But Not For Me". "Hard Hearted Hanna" is a wild "vamp" cooker and "Satin Doll" is fine and rhymthic while "The Man I Love" is quite and reflective. "Hearing Ella Sing" is the lone original written as a special tribute to Ella for this collection and it is a rhythm cooker with a loose and fine vocal...closing with "High High The Moon" is a grand finale to a sublime collection!
Bravo to Patti Austin and all the talented musicians...Ella is done proud & with love creating a new musical masterwork that is a satisfying wondrous magical musical journey that won a much deserved Grammy Award!!! |

Great Album Submitted on: 2007-03-05 |

| I don't have much to add to the other lauditory comments on this album which is one of my favorites. What I did want to add is the Patti and I graduated from the same high school, (Bay Shore NY). In high school Patti was a major talent and at least known to every student. In addition to being a really nice person she was the star of the school play, all state choir, cheerleader (YES!), student government, etc. She also had a single that got extensive play on a local radio station and was doing thnigs like good will tours of South America with her godfather Quincy Jones. None of us have been surprised by her success. |

A Remarkable Tribute To Ms. Ella Submitted on: 2007-01-26 |
|
"While I was immersed in Ella's world, I talked to many people who knew and worked with her through the years. One thing remained constant, they all talked about her extreme shyness. This was obviously restricted to her off stage persona because when Ella hit the stage she was the Queen - Long live the Queen . . . This is for Ella with love!" ~ Patti Austin ~
Who could better give a great tribute to the First Lady of Song Ella Fitzgerald than a remarkable jazz singer herself, Patti Austin? And this album is a showcase of a dozen of songs Ms. Ella was very famous for from the very first, "Too Close For Comfort" to the final track "How High The Moon." Ms. Austin will attract your ears and will capture your undivided attention as she performs these songs in her own inimitable style with the backing of The WDR Big Band and String Ensemble headed by a fine orchestrator Patrick Williams.
Her crowning glories include the Gershwins' "Love Is Here To Stay," "But Not For Me," and "The Man I Love." Ditto with her effortless singing in "Satin Doll," "How High The Moon" and "Honeysuckle Rose." These are my own favorites here.
Patrick Williams and Arthur Hamilton composed a tribute song to Ms. Ella called "Hearing Ella Sing," with partial lyrics here.
"Sweet and pure
That's for sure
And you'll always know
When you're hearing Ella sing...
If you're not groovin'
Then you are not hearing Ella sing
She sung with Bing and Frank and Nat
On everything from jazz to scat"
Let's keep Ms. Ella's music alive by listening to one of the best tribute albums ever recorded such as this one - Patti Austin's "For Ella."
Wholeheartedly recommended.

It doesn't get any better! Submitted on: 2007-01-22 |

| I've just left a Patti Austin concert in Fort Worth featuring these songs and I can't imagine anyone having delivered anything better. Patti is superb, on many songs including Yellow Basket and Miss Otis Regrets, she 'elevated' Ella's own style with more blues, jazz and drama. I have thought for years that Patti is the best kept secret in the music business. Ella fans should be pleased and Patti fans will be thrilled. |
