I think she's a sleeper who should be more widely listened to. She reminds me of Bonnie Raitt.

Probably everything that can be said about this album has already been said. I just wanted to add another 5 star review because this is an incredible cd! Bold As Axis is worth the price alone. I program the music for a small community radio station and these songs are some of my favorites that play on it.
Excellent classic soul covers by a great voice have aged well.

Joan Osborne had the good fortune/misfortune to have a Platinum record in the mid 1990's (that little song "One of Us") which was not at all representative of what she really sounds like. She is not a pop singer. She has an really rich, powerful voice with great range and is, I think, the best female singer around these days. This well-produced 2002 CD is mostly classic soul and R&B done in more modern arrangements, and her big, resonant, beautiful voice just cuts through the mix.

The complaint of earlier reviewers that this can't be a five star recording because its "all covers" is just mindless. Frank Sinatra's best recordings from the late 1950's and early 1960's, were songs mostly written in the 1930's and 1940's and covered by many, many people before he nailed the best versions ever. And Elvis's best records were all old songs at the time which of course he recorded the best versions.

In that spirit, this album has some of the best versions ever of some great timeless tunes. So it has "aged" really well since it was released. Just like Joan! Stevie Wonder's "Love's In Need of Some Love Today", while good in the original, was waiting for a great cover like Joan delivers here. I have listened to it literally several hundred times over four years. Buy this CD if you like classic soul and have ears for one of the best voices active today in one of her best performances.

Now I love Joan, she can sing like a ringing a bell, but this album stinks. It's one thing to perform your take on a classic song, but these tracks are producer updated with fake drums and other instrumentation that doesn't fit the legacy of these songs. NG for no good.
not a bad cover in the bunch

Some people like cover tunes, other don't. For me, a cover tune is great when the new artist puts a unique spin on the orginal "classic". Given that, I say that this disk is a top-ten favorite in a very large CD collection. Joan molds each of these songs into her own, yet the quality of the orginal "hit" is still to be found. I wish more artists would focus on re-doing some of the excellent songs that are already out there, rather than feeling like they should penning original tunes (most of which are average or below).
