Customer Reviews of This Album/CD

Very good album
Submitted on: 2009-06-26
I enjoy listening to this album by Threshold. The CD is full of dynamic songs that go from slow to fast. Most of the songs are enjoyable for me. I do not like "Round and Round" and "Avalon" that much, but the rest of the album is top notch quality.

There are a lot of enjoyable and interesting moments in almost every song. The first song has a cool intro riff followed by a synthesizer patch that makes the song sound awesome. The synthesizers and keyboard solos are great, especially the solos on "Choices", "Echoes of Life" and "Critical Mass". "Fragmentation" pumps me up as it starts off with a powerful keyboard intro followed by a drum part and then heavy riffs come in along with a cool keyboard melody.

Overall I recommend this album to anyone interested in Threshold.
GREAT Prog/Metal album - highly recommended!

Hypothetical was the first Threshold CD I heard, and while I also consider it a 5-star release (Narcissus is nothing short of a prog/metal masterpiece) I'm honestly beginning to think I like this CD better overall (maybe...still deciding)! While Hypothetical has several songs that didn't go on my MP3 player, Critical Mass doesn't have a single bad song. And the fact that the first 4 songs are all on the DVD Critical Energy should tell you something. All 4 are great but I particularly like Falling Away and Fragmentation. The build-up at the end of the latter sounds GREAT cranked up with good subs!! And while Avalon is somewhat mellower, it is also a great song with an outstanding guitar solo!!

I will definitely be getting more by this band and now consider them another example of why the American mainstream music industry SUCKs....I've never heard them on the air and only 2 people I know have even heard of this band.

If you like prog/metal/heavy rock, or just good rock, check this band out immediately!! If you like Dream Theater/Symphony X and the like - this is right up your alley. If they get more exposure who knows, they might even tour over here and the rest of us would get to see them live. And by that I mean more than just festivals and major markets...I mean an actual tour!

And a short note to anyone who doesn't consider this prog - you must be stuck in the past. Just like everything else prog DOES evolve. It's no longer just a bunch of bands that sound like Yes/Genesis/ELP, otherwise it would become boring.

I definitely consider this prog, though I consider it a sub-genre, variously called melodic metal, heavyprog, powerprog or, more simply, progmetal.
Threshold - Critically Good

After the excellent "Hypothetical" released in 2001 it was going to be difficult for this band to come up with a follow up, but with "Critical Mass" they put out another really solid album that ranks up with the top tier of progressive metal. I don't like this one quite as much as the previous effort, but it is another good release. Highlights include the opening rocker "Phenomenon", "Echoes Of Life", "Round And Round", and the epic closing title track. The album seems to be a concept piece about re-incarnation although I have not really studied the lyrics enough to get the whole story. Why this band is not playing to huge crowds in arenas is a complete mystery to me.
Best for Threshold

I own 4 Threshold CDs, this one is far and above the rest and an excellent progressive metal band. They have been through 3 lead vocalists and I even have another by the same singer, but Critical Mass is a true gem. Has the hard jams and mellower intricate works (Avalon). Critical Mass Parts 1-3 is divine.
If you had to pick one Threshold CD, this is the one.
Reminds me a lot of Enchant...
Submitted on: 2007-03-24
Good rock with some prog tinges that reminds me of the band Enchant. And, that's a good thing. The vocalist is powerful but at times delivers some weak performances. The first song is a good rocker but the vocals sound too Scorpionish. After that it gets much better ending on a great note with Critical Mass (Part 1-3). Definitely worth checking out and makes me interested in hearing their other CDs.
