Enter review: Syleena Johnson - Chapter 2 (3.77 stars) Submitted on: 2009-03-30 |

1. Intro - ***3/4
2. Faithful To You - ****1/4
3. Now That I Got You - **** Love the melody. The way the lyrics flow. It's calming yet repetitive towards end. Even so, I can put it on repeat.
4. Dear You - *** Not too crazy about this track. It's quiet, piano-filled, dinner-and-then-a-movie filler material.
5. Guess What? - ****1/4 Tell em, Syleena. Loved this song since I first heard it.
6. I'm Gon' Cry - ****1/2 This song is pretty hot. The guitars, the production, everything is good. Except the chorus. It could have been more. Otherwise, it's hot.
7. Is That You? - ***1/2
8. Tonight I'm Gonna Let Go - ***3/4
9. If You Play Your Cards Right - **** Great intro. Nice to just chill back to.
10. No Words - **** The intro grabs me like nothing else. She's good at that. All this song needs is one more verse instead of repeating the chorus so much at the end.
11. So Willingly - ***1/2 Pleasant.
12. Guitars Of The Heart (Happy) - ****1/4 Stripped down and beautiful.
13. I Believe In Love - ***1/4 Too upbeat but brings balance to the CD.
14. Outro - **1/2 I wonder why the outro isn't the last track. I guess the rest are bonus songs.
15. Tonight I'm Gonna Let Go (Remix) **** - Better than the original.
16. Joined At The Hip - ***3/4 Pleasant outro. Relaxing.
Amazon is missing Is That You?, track 7. It's alright, not the best. But I must note on the intro and outro - they aren't pointless like a lot of them are (namely the intro).
It's a good album overall. I still want this album and will buy it. Eventually.

Syleena's best Submitted on: 2008-09-19 |

| This is by all means Syleena's best work to date. The writing is incredible and she sings with passion and purpose. It's like an old school record where the words really meant something and you can tell she is singing from her soul, yet the feeling is still new cause there is not an artist out there like her. "No Words" has to be one of the best songs ever written by anyone. The concept is crazy and Syleena steps up to the plate and knocks it out the box. Her new album is coming in Janurary, so be on the look out!!! |

Chapter 2: The Voice Submitted on: 2008-05-27 |

It's so appropriate that Syleena decided to call this album, THE VOICE. She is definitely one of the most underrated true singers in the r&b field. This album continues the excellent path she began with her debut - she co-wrote all of the songs yet the only one released was the R Kelly produced GUESS WHAT? - while that song probably got attention for the "R-rah connection", it's not the strongest track.
Syleena is one of those accomplished vocalists who has the power to sing out powerfully & soulfully as well as scat with the jazz greats and utilize restrained vocals to emphasize her heartfelt lyrics.
My favorite tracks are: NO WORDS, SO WILLINGLY, GUITARS OF THE HEART, IF YOU PLAY YOUR CARDS RIGHT, IS THAT YOU & I BELIEVE IN LOVE.
If you gave her debut a chance & enjoyed it, you should definitely give her sophomore set a try - her songwriting skills along with the production shows improvement on this set and indeed, showcases her beautiful voice. To those who are unfamiliar, you won't hear a bunch of guest rappers or hard hip hop beats, BUT if you are into unique "sangers", give Syleena Johnson a listen! |

Thanks for introducing her to me, Kanye! Submitted on: 2008-03-30 |

I have heard Syleena Johnson's songs on the radio a handful of times, but she definitely isn't on the musical forefront. I heard her on Kanye West's song called "All Falls Down", and felt that she had a unique, yet strong vocal instrument. I finally gave her a chance and picked up her second album, "Chapter Two: The Voice", and I really like what I heard. At her best, Syleena has a nice voice, though it is not my favorite. It can be smooth as silk or as rough as you please. At times, her voice has a striking resemblance to that of Blu Cantrell's. It's definitely something you have to actually listen to in order to fully grasp what I am saying and attempting to illustrate.
You will be able to find ballads, mid-tempos and fast songs on "The Voice." I was really entertained by the musical arrangements on many of the tracks. They had me bobbing my head and snapping my fingers. Also, Syleena puts plenty of emotion into her songs which is something I appreciate. "Put Your Hands Where My Eyes Can See" has one of the dopest beats ever, and she samples the song on "Tonight I'm Gonna Let Go." Busta even lends his talents on the song's remix. This song is easily one of the album's brightest moments. "If You Play Your Cards Right" was originally performed by Alicia Meyers, but the remake found on this album is beautifully done (so is Meyer's version, of course.) Syleena's voice is at its smoothest on this ballad, particularly on the chorus. The lyrics on "Now That I Got You" were very sweet. In this song, Syleena is telling her man that now that she has him, she is going to do nice things for him like cook him dinner, give him massages, etc.
R&B fans, if you are looking for a quality album with stellar performances on each track, invest in Syleena Johnson's album, "Chapter 2: The Voice." Folks, she really does have a "voice" that is worth listening to.

Amazing is an understatement, Syleena really shines in this effort. Her first CD hooked me and i was blown away by the depth of her voice and talents.
Moving from sad to happy this CD covers a full range of emotions and transitions easily from one to another while her voice penetrates deep.
Easily one of the best R&B cd's i own, this rivals even the best of the best on par with the great Mary J. Blige and Mariah. |
