| For lack of a better term, I classify these guys as "jazzy pop". The Gang creates some wonderful stuff here, covering their usual stock-in-trade of lazy afternoon pop music, but they also manage to throw in a few surprises as well. Vocalist Mark Callahan's ultra-smooth delivery is in fine form, and the album is a true group effort, with everybody contributing to composing. Robbie James, for example, steps up in style with the outstanding first single "Nomadsland", but his jerky romp "Camp of the Moon" is so different from everything else on the album it sounds not only out of place but downright awkward. However, it's easy to forgive the Gang such flights of fancy when there's "Carioca Girl", "These Years" and "I Will" - a trio of absolutely gorgeous, sparkling tunes that merge seamlessly into one another. Other standout tracks include the funky "Anodyne Dream" and the uptempo, begging-to-be-a-single "Trust". All in all, this CD beautifully showcases the Gang's signature "style" which their fans have come to know and love. |
