| I have always enjoyed Petula Clark's music through my life. My boyfried played this CD for me and I was in memory heaven. I remember one of my favorite songs was Downtown. Put me back to where I was when I heard it as a 9 year old. Don't sleep in the Subway Darling transported me back to when I was 11. Each song was a revelation of memory and amazingly I still knew most of the words. It was a totally enthralling experience to realize how much a part of my life each song was even if only in passing as radio background music. I can hardly wait to try introducing these songs to my nieces and nephews. The nuance of tune with orchestration and the voice of Petula Clark should be enough to get their attention. My Boyfriend gave me the CD. What a good boyfriend! |

Easily Petula Clark's Best Hit Compilation Submitted on: 2009-11-10 |

| Petula Clark, the English pop songstress who I consider to be the best female singer of the mid-1960's, charted with 15 Billboard Top 40 hits here in America from 1965 to 1968. All 15 are included here in this set, plus 6 other welcome additions. 21 songs in all, so you get your money's worth here! Pet's voice was absolutely stunning; she can belt it out with one song, and then be more mellow the next, and do it all with professional ease and class. This unique artist also deserves, in my humble opinion, induction into the Rock And Roll Hall of Fame. A highly recommended collection from one of the most underrated talents of the British "music invasion." |

Petula's outstanding artistry at its peak Submitted on: 2009-05-04 |

Rejoice, Petula Clark fans! Ultimate Petula Clark has a lot of her best hits and well known songs on it; and there's not a single dud in the bunch! Petula Clark could turn out a song right alongside the best of them; she was and remains a huge talent. I love to hear her sing and I have several of her record albums, too. On the CD the quality of the sound is excellent and I like that artwork.
The album starts with Petula Clark delivering one of her biggest hits ever, "Downtown." This tune really caught on with the young and the hip back when it was released and it still shines bright today! The music fits imperfectly with Petula's singing and that's grand; the brass is used particularly well. Petula's voice is as clear as a bell and she simply never sounded better. "I Know A Place" has an infectiously catchy melody to it; Petula handles the tempo and key changes like the pro she was and always will be! The backup singers harmonize very well, too--not that Petula needed it but they do sound pretty good anyway. "I Know A Place" has an upbeat flavor to it that you just can't forget.
"Round Every Corner" makes good use of the percussion as Petula sings this to perfection--and beyond! I also like "Call Me;" Petula's version of this classic features her squarely front and center--right where she belongs! "A Sign Of The Times" was always one of my very favorite Petula Clark songs; she really handles this well and with the music it all works wonderfully. Petula never skips a beat and I'm very impressed. In addition, "Color My World" has a dynamic, electric beat to it that Petula enhances with her marvelous singing; the strings work well in the musical arrangement. Petula sings "Color My World" without ever letting go of a single superfluous note.
"This Is My Song" is very beautiful; I could never tire of hearing Petula Clark sing "This Is My Song"--what a poignant ballad. "Don't Sleep In The Subway" was another huge, huge hit for Petula Clark; she handles this with panache and it couldn't have been done any better as far as I'm concerned. Petula's "Don't Sleep In The Subway" is a masterpiece.
"The Other Man's Grass Is Always Greener" moves me and that music really helps to make this number strong. "Don't Give Up" sparkles when the wonderful Petula Clark sings it; she delivers this brilliantly. "Don't Give Up" is a number Petula makes all her own with her very fine sense of timing. "Happy Heart" is yet another moving ballad; Petula was born to sing songs like this and I dare you not to like "Happy Heart" when Petula sings it THIS well.
"The Song Is Love" has a fantastic arrangement that puts Petula in the spotlight; and the CD ends strong with Petula Clark performing "I Don't Know How To Love Him" from the show Jesus Christ Superstar. Petula handles this masterfully and by the time the album's over you'll be screaming for more!
Petula Clark will never be forgotten; her CDs sell very well to this day and hers was a talent we rarely see. I highly recommend this album for her fans; and it makes an excellent starter CD for people just discovering her incredibly special artistry.
