Talented young artists create one awesome album! Submitted on: 2009-05-04 |

| Puffy Amiyumi is/are awesome! I first heard of them on a TV show I used to watch when I was younger (Teen Titans if you must know) and always wanted a copy of one of their CDs. Their songs are a lot of fun and there's a great variety. They have catchy upbeat pop songs, cool rock songs, and a couple of nice ballads. They aren't typical Japanese Pop, but they retain that Japanese charm that makes their music so fun to listen to. They have two songs in English that are pretty good, but their Japanese songs are much better. |

AWESOME HARMONIZING, but . . . SO MUCH MORE!!! Submitted on: 2008-07-27 |

There's so much that's Spectacular about this music. And although it's apparent from reviews, editorials, and S. American, European, Chinese, etc. CD releases, that people all over the World have discovered this, it seems that many people here still haven't heard them (for the same reasons I never would have noticed/been drawn to them - VERY poor marketing mostly - & this band is about SOOO much more than the 2 very Cool & talented singers - who are in their 30s - Japanese "cute" marketing isn't reserved for kids as it is here and the music is as good as Pop gets). And this music is absolutely Not reserved for the Japanese & J Pop Culture fans, nor is it like anything you've ever heard from Japan (much is composed by Andy Sturmer of "JellyFish" - who?).
I think Eclectic, Diverse, and yet surprisingly Familiar would best describe every aspect of Puffy AmiYumi, considering all involved, but most of all it describes what I think is Andy Sturmer's greatest talent (among Many!) . . . again, who? Doesn't matter if you never heard of him. This guy has incredible talents but, again, the magic here is with his ability to bring the most unlikely elements together into fantastic harmony. You see this in his meaningful use of all Sorts of instruments, from the ordinary to the extraordinary to ones most of us never heard of (clapping, kettle drums, mellotoron, marimba, even the vocal kazoo). But mostly what amazes me is his ability to identify the best elements from Pop & Rock of all ages (those sounds, rhythms, driving beats, fun background vocals, Power solos, Dick Dale surf riffs, "oh OH Oh oh ohs", "la las", clip-claps, any part of any music that you immediately loved, made you involuntarily dance, and made you smile even when you didn't want to), then he brings them together into New, Fresh, Original, and Great modern Pop tunes. I'm not talking about songs made from, sampled from, or even based on old tunes. These are all entirely new (and great!) melodies that have found fresh uses for those familiar Pop gems. And he even mixes eras . . . and makes it not only work but seem like it couldn't be any other way! I sincerely feel that Sturmer is truly a brilliant musician/composer. And it's the most unlikely package that has me convinced of that (this odd but belonging-together diverse group). And these Cool Energetic Chickies contribute all over the place but most notably with their beautiful ability to harmonize. They make these songs Soar - when you hear them, you'll see that I'm not exaggerating.
As for this particular CD, it's . . . WAY better than just "Nice"! It's Exciting and Addictive! I've found myself wanting to hear something from it daily and then I always end up just letting the whole CD play! I listened before reading the credits and was pleasantly surprised (and not too surprised) that Andy Sturmer composed all the songs (shared credit on 1). Amazingly, they're all different and all Great songs!
Highlights for me:
* "Planet Tokyo" - Soaring harmonies. Sounds great cranked-up!
* "Tokyo Nights" - Fun song w/fun 80s electronica
* "Sayonara" - really nice melody & a favorite of mine
* "Invisible Tomorrow" - Smile-on-your-face song, English version "Friends Forever" is great too!
* "Thank You" - Lennon/Ono-like folky tune w/Voice Kazoo & Banjo!
* "Your Love is a Drug" - Should have been a MEGA hit! Great contemporary Pop Rock Song! Fun Background vocals. If they had only put this one song on the CD, it would be well worth the $17.
* "Shiawase" - really nice relaxing song
* "Urei" - Powerful, parts remind me of a Scorpions song
* "Teen Titans Theme" - This is just a classic-like-you've-never-heard Way Cool SuperHero tune w/Dick Dale riffs & 80s Power Solo!

I can't understand a word of it, but I'm a big Puffy AmiYumi fan. I love their music. My favorite song of the album (and ever) is Tokyo Nights. I could listen to this one a hundred times in a row without getting bored. I adored K2G (whatever the title means) also, just not as much as Tokyo Nights. Other than that, Vacation and Invisible Tomorrow were good picks.
I would seriously recommend this album, especially to fellow J-Pop fans. Puffy rocks!!!! |
