Title is misleading, but still a good listen Submitted on: 2009-06-22 |

The Steve Miller Band. With a career spanning over three decades, the Steve Miller Band created some of the finest guitar pop/rock around. The group have always been classic rock radio staples, and it's not hard to see why.
In 2003, the group's longtime label, Capitol, released 'Young Hearts: Complete Greatest Hits.' The album contains tracks from the SMB in their psychedelic blues days of the '60s, their radio hits in the '70s, and their mainstream hits of the '80s.
So let's face the facts: As far as single disc compilations go, this one is pretty great. 'My Dark Hour,' 'Space Cowboy,' among others, are here from his early years in the late-1960s, and all of his radio hits are here from the '70s. 'Space Intro/Fly Like An Eagle,' 'Take the Money and Run,' the full length version of 'The Joker' all appear on this set for your listening pleasure.
The sound quality is excellent, too! These tracks were digitally remastered and they sound just amazing!!!
There are some flaws here, too.
Ah sigh. It seems there will never be the perfect Steve Miller Band compilation. 'Abracadabra,' his big hit from 1982, is edited down from five+ minutes to 3:41. And 'My Dark Hour' is edited from three minutes to 2:36.
And there are plenty of tracks missing. For a single disc, this is great. About as good as it gets, actually, for a single disc. But what about 'Heart Like A Wheel,' 'Going To Mexico,' 'Gangster of Love,' 'Mercury Blues,' or perhaps 'Sacrifice'?
The point is, if you are going to have a 'Complete Greatest Hits' for the Steve Miller Band, it can't be a single disc. You need two discs. So in a way, this is a blown opportunity by Capitol. We could finally have a career retrospective of the SMB released on two CDs with all songs in their full length versions.
Overall, for now, this is as good as it gets for a fan of the Steve Miller Band. Now all we can do is wait for a comprehensive two-disc collection with all songs in their full length album versions.
Recommended, for now anyway. |

| If I were rating this cd based on some of the songs on it, I would definitely give it 5 stars. Some of my favorite songs of all time are on here. But, I do have some quibbles with the cd. I never did like Abracabra that much. One night the radio station said they had the new Steve Miller Band record, and they were going to play the title track. By the time they played it, I had called my buddy Mark, and we were on the phone, waiting. Cheesy, I know, but this was the ritual back then.... So then Abracadabra finally came on, and it had a cool beat... Sounded kind of groovy... But it had the goofiest lyrics imaginable. I had to hold on tight to my Fly Like an Eagle album so that it wouldn't get sucked into the speakers that night. It was scary! Back to Young Hearts.... Abracadabra is the second song on this cd. I would have put it a bit later in the sequence. The liner notes say that this is intended to be an updated version of Greatest Hits 1974-1978. I wish they didn't leave off Winter Time and True Fine Love. Man those are all cool songs. I would leave all of them on, and as I mentioned, add Abracadabra, but closer to the end would be appropriate. Then, there are a few songs from the earlier days, all of which are great, but which are also on Best of 1968-1973. So a bit out of place here, I think.... It would have been good to pull a few of the best cuts from Steve's '80's albums perhaps, because more space would have been available. Those albums are largely unheard for many people, and this release could have rectified that a bit. Lastly, the shrinkwrap on the cd has got a really cool design on it, which is not on the artwork of the cd elsewhere. I bet this started as a cool idea, but it the reality is that the picture on the cd cover is OK, but the cool design on the shrinkwrap is in the trash can. I saw the image on Amazon just now, as a thumbnail and was reminded of this. Very cool, but not attached to the cd, which is unfortunate. So anyways, as I write this, I am listening to a sequence of the cd that I programmed into my player. It includes the songs from the late 70's, going (roughly) chronologically forward. It sounds great. My wife just came in and said so... (Earlier today, I listened to GH 1968-1973 programmed in a manner analogous to this. I played it about 5 times!) In each case, the result makes for an excellent listening experience. I cannot help but think that the manufactured artifact could have accomplished the same or more.... If my last name were Capitol, I would produce a new version. The first disc would cover 1968-1973, as many songs as i could fit, (but not "The Joker"). All killer, no filler. Then, I would put The Joker as first song on disc 2, and have songs from Eagle and Dreams. Heck, how about Abracadabra as the very last song on that disc? Then for disc three ("Bonus Disc!") I would put cuts from Abracadabra, Italian X-Rays, Circle Of Love, and the other albums since. I have heard the SMB box set, and it has some similarly goofy problems, each of which could easily have been remedied, if only they would just give me (or you) a call... Steve's stuff is great., but all is not created equal, and a little more attention to detail would go a long way.... |

| There is nothing like looking back and listening to some good old music. My daughter couldn't get over that we knew the song "The Joker". |

WHERE'S THE EARLY STUFF????!!!??? Submitted on: 2008-09-22 |

This collection, although filled with good tunes from Steve Miller, only has three tunes from his first five albums, which were, in my hardly humble opinion, were his best. I have compiled a two disc compilation from my Steve Miller collection that I take on the road, and the whole first disc plus the first 5 tunes of the second disc are tunes I love from the first five albums.
That's what's missing from the Steve Miller CD choices, a two disc comp. with equal emphasis on his whole career. Not even the box set offers enough tunes from the early years, where it really was the Steve Miller BAND, not just a bunch of guys rounded up for each album and tour.
Most folks would be surprised at how great the his early material is/was.
Check out his early albums, especially "Sailor", before they go out of print.
