I really got interested in YahZarah's music in 2003 when her video "Wishing" got heavy rotation on BET. I was stationed in Cuba and could not get my hands on her CD. Once I got back to the states, her's was the first one I picked up. My favorites on the CD without a doubt has got to be "Wishing" and "Feel Me". Her music and singing style reminds me a lot of Jill Scott. Very underated album that is definitely worth a listen.
The cd is hot

I love this cd!!! I just got into the whole neo-soul movement and yahzarah really stood out to me so i had to order. My favorite song on there is "rooftop". I'd reccommend this cd and artist to anyone who appreciates real music.
MARVELOUS Album: A real breath of fresh-air

This album is a total and complete break, from the un-original "tired" gimmicky musical output being foisted on the public today..Just like"Hear Me"managed to do,"Blackstar"also does-away with the "cookie-cutter" formula being utilized today, and burst onto the scene with a new innovative style of melodious music that definitely brings a"dish"of new"flavor"to a table cluttered with bland, insipid offerings...The album is jump-started with a lively introduction by Yahzarah explaining to the listener how to correctly pronounce her name, even going as far as to(syllable by syllable)slowly"walk you through"it and also actually spell it out for you!!I had to laugh when she says:"Don't RUIN it,don't RUIN it!!!"Not Hezekiah, not Habakkuk,it's YAH-ZA-RAH!" Yahzarah first alerts the listener that they've just stepped into a PARALLEL UNIVERSE!!(Hey,with a moniker like"Yahzarah"maybe she IS from another universe!!!!)Funny thing is I'd actually owned this album back around 2000(purchased along with"Hear Me"by "some chick"that I only recall, had a rather wierd(and long)name!)but for the life of me,I didn't know that THIS was the album, that I was wracking my brain trying to remember, until I was listening to the albums samples, and I heard the song"Cry"which immediately caused me to realize:"THIS,was that"mystery"album that I was trying SO hard to remember!!"Cry" and"Guillotine"are my two favorite Yahzarah songs..Back to Blackstar though:this album can be enjoyed from beginning to end, without once putting your grimy"mitts"on the skip button!!"Cry"is a song that I can't get enough of because of its'pain-laced vocals(that causes one to REALLY empathize with her dilemma on this song)the melancholy music and these following touching lyrics:"Standing here in this place, search for love to fill this space, loving touch that inspires grace." "I need you now,REVEAL your face, search for love, can't find a trace.." Yahzarah then paints a scene of an anxious/stressful and torturous existence with:"I pace the floor and shut the door, hurt, can't TAKE IT anymore!"I keep trying but I'm NOT finding strength." I love her convincing heart-felt declaration:"No matter how LONG it takes,I'll heal from this heartbreak." This following line is so true for people who are able to mask their stifling inner turmoil from those around them:"HIDDEN pain, with a SMILING face." and the heart-felt surrender:"Tommorrow I WILL cry.."My heart really went out to her,as I contemplated her SUPREMELY difficult(actually IMPOSSIBLE)task of:"Chasing shadows in the DARK"(slow down and contemplate THIS line, before you listen any further! this sounds like a line that Lamya might've"lent"to her..seeing as how doing that is just as impossible to accomplish as what Lamya said she was doing on her song:"Splitting Atoms":"And I'm holding on tight, with an OPEN hand!")but I'll FORGET my broken heart,I'll forget that I'm needing love.."Yahzarah cleverly refers to someone"bawling"like a baby while holding their face, with:"Pour out my soul to these empty hands.." I've been listening to"Cry"over 10 times each and every day since I purchased this album!!! I could not even FORCE myself not to play it constantly..The ONLY thing thats made me give it a rest was my Pastor calling for the congregation to go on a consecration for the Lord!!Asking each member to go on a fast until evening each day,and NO television, magazines or(non-Christian)music until the consecration is over. Admitedly,I hesitated in purchasing this album, because a lot of its' tracks are also on"Hear Me."(which I already own)However I am so glad, that I didn't go with my first mind, because then I would not've been able to enjoy(again)excellent songs like"wishing" "so amazing" "baby"and the rather risque' "bury it"(which nonetheless manages to CLEARLY get its' point across)and also"one day"which are all exclusive to"Blackstar" I loved this album so much when I first bought it,that I've even handed it to a deejay a few times(to play for the night)while my friends and I attended some trendy nightclubs in Detroit!!I wanted to see what everybody else thought of this great album!!After initial puzzled looks, everybody eventually seemed to"get with it"while grinning and nodding their heads! I'm SO glad Amazon solved this"mystery album"delimma for me!! This album SMOKES!!Get it,and recieve your own blast of fresh air!!

I really wanted to like this album. Honestly, I really did. Her voice is beautiful and she definitely has a lot of soul, but the songs just aren't cutting it for me. Being a former Erykah Badu backup vocalist, I expected something at least a little out of the ordinary, a little quirky, something unique. But I didn't get it. The songs and production are generic, if not cheesy. They could've been done by absolutely anyone. They have no personality. They are boring and I could not make it through this album without pressing the skip button in the middle of almost every track. (That's when you know the song is doomed, and it's not going to get better.) The only songs I like, or even remember for that matter, are the "Yah Intro," "Bury It" and "Baby Love." The title track's alright. Words cannot express my disappointment. I hope she comes with it next time around, if there is one.
I love those old re-runs!

The "Hear Me" album was a breath of fresh air in an era when quality offerings are few and far between. My main gripe with blackstar is ITS EXACTLY THE SAME! The producers have gone into the studio, placed the CD in pressed the randomize button! Strong album, the girl can clearly sing but we've been waiting 4 years for new material.
