amazing... Submitted on: 2008-10-14 |

This album was given to me by a friend, accompanied by a disclaimer basically telling me that I would probably not like it. Sure enough, he was right. I hated this album. I hated the low volume and constant hiss of the recording and I hated Turla's voice. I drudged through it and I simply put this record down and went on to a Death Cab cd that came in the music package from my friend.
3 months later I decided to go back to it and listen once more. I noticed that I didn't quite hate it as much, and then gave it another listen the next day. Never in my life have I gone from hating something to loving something in such a short time. My God is this a good album, perfectly executed, perfectly composed, and the lyrics are more creative and eerie than any I've heard. On my all-time list of most listened-to albums, this ranks probably 2nd behind Modest Mouse's Lonesome Crowded West. I enjoy it that much, not just because it's different, but because there is a good story behind the music. I wont get into that, but the first thing that will hook someone is that intro...old western piano and a strange personification of the devil. From that point on, my vision gets stuck in a sepia tinge and I get sucked into the album. It really is a great piece of work. |

| These guys are simply AWESOME! I saw them in concert with HeavyHeavyLowLow, Fear Before The March Of Flames, and Thursday, and I was stunned. Live, they are a elegantly sloppy band. This cd is Murder By Death at their height. "Until Morale Improves, The Beatings Will Continue" is by far my favorite song on this cd. So, in the end, if you've never heard Murder By Death before, purchase this cd now. You will not be disapointed! |

| I had been a fan of Murder By Death for about a year before this CD was released. I picked it up the day it came out and was instantly blown away. The songs on this CD flow perfectly together and songs themselves are amazing as well. Murder By Death is one of the most musically talented bands that I have ever heard, and they are by far my favorite. This CD is amazing, buy it now. |

| I first heard this band a few months ago when a member of my tapers group told me about them and asked me to tape them when they came to my town. I was completely blown away by this album. It has not left my car cd player since. This album is nothing short of brilliant and I cannot believe these guys have been over looked. Buy this album, hell buy 12, this band is way more worthy of your support than 99.9% of the bands out there. |

Poetry and Tone Submitted on: 2005-09-05 |

I was introduced to this album by a friend who said, "I don't know what it is, you'd just like it." That explanation coming from a music major who usually has a lot to say on the matter.
I'm not a big fan of either music or poetry, but this has good aspects of both. Great music founds a base for the lyrics, which is described often as the story of the Devil in a western setting, but then again, there seems to be a lot of political meaning to it. You know, Texas, oil, nuclear war, all that wonderful imagery. In fact I'm rather surprised at the other reviews of this album that neglect to mention this aspect, but I think that's more a power of poetry: double-meanings, the literal and the abstract. That's the way poetry should be, but modern poetry tends to throw that out in favor of simplistic blank-verse.
The tone of this music, though, is usually what predominates. As much as I like the vocals, I like most to just sit back and let the music take me along on its own power. I don't know, I'm a post-rock fan, apocalyptic songs are my thing.
