The Carpenters' Quagmire of Hits Collections, Part Three Submitted on: 2009-11-11 |

I am trying to review every hits collection, since I've bought four of them and am still looking for a non-remixed set that doesn't screw up "Top of the World" and "Yesterday Once More" like "Ultimate Collection" did.
Jim Bagley's review is much appreciated for showing what's been remixed by that obsessive Mr. Carpenter (almost everything) and what hasn't been (almost nothing). Because the mixes are really not bad, and the song selection on here is among the best anywhere, I think this merits recommendation for anyone who needs a reasonably-priced intro to the amazing voice of Karen Carpenter. I also like the way this uses the cover art from the all-time classic Gold: 1969-1973. (My cover does anyway: I've also seen this with Karen and Richard on the cover.)
An example of a good remix is "Goodbye To Love." Because this is the most rock-oriented of the duo's hits, kicking up the drums and rerecording the piano to match--but not overpower--Karen's vocal works for me. Do I still prefer the original? YES and it annoys me that kids looking no further will think this is how it always sounded. But for those of us who have both versions, this is OK.
Unlike the big "Essential" box or the "Ultimate Collection", this at least has the non-LP version of the #1 hit "Top of the World". It also has "Yesterday Once More" without seguing into loud motor revving like those two collections. And the single version of "Solitaire" is a big plus.
Until a better package of original mixes comes along, which could be never, "Gold 35" seems to give the most bang for your buck. |

| I was a little concerned because of a few comments about the remixing. Folks, these songs sound fantastic! It is true that Richard slightly over did the backup vocals on a few. I couple of times it seemed to me that Karen's part had a little more reverberation than I recall but, I am so old and that was so long ago. Karen's voice is absolutely lovely and the instrumentals are first rate. If you are a purest you might disagree but, honestly, this collection sounds fantastic to me and in most instances are better recordings than the old analog originals. Amazon offers this CD set at such a great price, you won't find a better collection of music anywhere near this price. |

A Carpenter's fan's dream! Submitted on: 2009-08-23 |

| If you are a fan of the Carpenters, this album is the best of the best. It has all their best songs and a couple of hidden gems that I had not heard before. It would have been worth the price at even double. I would declare it a must have for any fan and a great addition to their collection! |
