Leave the melody alone Submitted on: 2009-11-20 |

I recently received my copy of "Renee Olstead" after a recommendation from a friend. The recording quality throughout is excellent. Renee sings with a maturity well beyong her years and is reminiscent of the old Jazz ladies we all know. On most tracks the singing technique is excellent and I much preferrred the slower numbers which leave less room for improvisation. Which is why I preferred these. But Renee falls into the trap of messing with the tune, and breaking into too much fiddly improvisation. She is not the first, as I find that many Jazz/Blues vocalists don't seem to resist the temptation to drift off into some strange skatty thing. So much so that they, and Renee lose the melody and could be singing anything.
I like the sound of Renee's voice and her singing ability so much that I would love an album of standards left without all the vocal experimentation. I notice the wonderful Nora Jones has gone off into some Rock/Funk world and frankly no longer sounds much like Nora Jones. I fear Renee will mix it up too much as she is influenced by outsiders.
Renee needs to listen to a Julie London standards collection to see what I mean. Frank Sinatra always sounded like Frank Sinatra and you always knew what he was singing. That's why he lasted. It works. Pick a style and song type and stick to it.
Buy it nevertheless and enjoy her sound and the ability she demonstrates to keep pace and rythmn. Overall an opportunity lost.

Refreshing Submitted on: 2009-04-24 |

| This artist is a breath of fresh air amongst all the other singers of this genre. Her vocal ability, in this first album, is open and airy. |

Fabulous Voice Submitted on: 2009-03-13 |

| She sometimes doesn't sing the right songs for her voice but if you like piano bar/jazz sound, she just might be your girl. Mellow and calm. I really like her. |

| When you're feeling down and it seems that life has dealt you a bad hand just sit back and listen to the voice of an angel. A talent like Renee Olstead comes only once in a generation. |
