The real rap rebels Submitted on: 2009-09-06 |

| I got this for my cousin who listens to hip hop or whatever they call it now. I grew out of rap, but I wanted her to hear what I used to. These guys actually had something to say, and it wasn't always pretty. Now it's all about glamor and shock value. Rap was just plain better before it went double mainstream. |

| I was very surprised to listen to this album this many years after they came out. I was big into rap and metal as a teenager growing up in the 80's which was a little odd in the area I lived in. Somehow...these guys slipped me by which is unfortunate. The songs are so political and ahead of their time. It's funny to hear them talk about some of the same things that are wrong with the government at this moment, and they were rapping about it in 1989. To hear them talking about our politicians in the 80's turning us into a socialist government was great! Thanks Public Enemy. |

can't truss it Submitted on: 2008-07-25 |

| let's just forget about all the fun that is flavor of love. forget about the roast of flavor flav. this is the real deal. chuck d has a sound all his own that no one else can touch. i rolled up to a local place with this on and people asked who the new artist was, all i could do was shake my head and break the news to them. this is what rap should be and needs to be again. you can play this over and over it doesnt lose it's appeal. so if 911 IS a joke in your town and you just can't truss it, quit tryin to find your old cassettes and buy this boooooyyyyyeeeeeee. |

I LOVE Public Enemy. To be honest, they are the best of the rap genre. 'Power To The People And The Beats: Public Enemy's Greatest Hits' was released in late 2004, and it remains the definitive single-disc PE collection.
Chuck D and Flava Flav know how to rhyme, and it shows on some of these classics. 'Bring The Noise' is legendary, 'By The Time I Get To Arizona' is just timeless, while 'Fight The Power' is a rhymefest featuring two of the kings of the microphone.
But, I do have several complaints here. Why is their duet with legendary speed metal band Anthrax 'Bring Tha Noize' missing? It's pretty much a heavy metal-rap version of the timeless classic, and I'm really disappointed to see it not appear on this set. Another surprising omission is the classic hip hop FM radio staple 'Night of the Living Baseheads.'
Overall, despite several key omissions, this still remains to this day the definitive single-disc Public Enemy compilation. Highly recommended to anybody who appreciates classic rap and hip hop.
Highly recommended for any casual Public Enemy fan. ENJOY!!! |
