A few really good songs. Several boring ones. That seems to be Mark's way these days.
Sounds and plays like a fine scotch whisky

I don't believe Shangri-La is something easily defined. I would contend that those that have blasted this effort figured it was a new Dire Straits album - it isn't. It is something different in every respect. I think it is definitely a cultivated taste as the more I hear this the finer it gets. Someone reviewed it negatively here, putting it in the fine cheese and wine category - it is in many ways. Perhaps a bit more fine scotch whisky...

I believe it to be Knopfler's best to date.
Superb!

I'm a big fan of Dire Straits, and have recently started listening to Mark Knopfler's albums. The Golden Heart album is as good if not better than any of Dire Straits' releases, although the music is of course somewhat more mellow than the rock bank. Shangri-La is the second of MK's albums that I've purchased and it ranks close to Golden Heart in pure listening pleasure. Needless to say, I'm sold on Knopfler. With 14 songs and over 60 minutes of great music you get a lot for your money. Postcards From Paraguay, 5:15 A.M., and The Trawlerman's Song are my favorites, but all 14 of the songs are good. As a songwriter, I think Knopfler is as good as Lennon/McCartney, Elton John, or Paul Simon, but like Dire Straits, he's underrated and unappreciated.

A great CD. I love his guitar playing and this CD was no exception. He is truly fantastic. Mary

"don't crash the ambulance" was written for Barrack Obama. He should take a listen.
