| Unfortunately, these songs are over-produced, layered with that brand of keyboard schmaltz that suffocates even the best of vocal performances. The gruff but wondrous voice of Alejandro Sanz screams and begs for air on a hits album that features typical Spanish songs of romantic love and longing, el dolor dulce del corazón. And Sanz has great vocal moves: he's the unshaven man of mystery in the corner, quiere su dulcinia bella quien esta lejos de los manos y los labios. The song "No Es Lo Mismo" is the highlight here. Given freedom to breathe, to flower while greener thumbs twiddled the knobs, the other songs could have broken from the servitude to florid popular taste. Check out Sanz's more recent work, especially the great "thanks but no thanks" tune "Te lo agradezco pero no," a duet with Shakira, whose vocal rises slowly and slyly from a hint to a presence to an embrace denied. |
