Customer Reviews of This Album/CD

Durante does these tunes up right !!!
Submitted on: 2009-04-12
Hello, Young Lovers/One Of Those Songs is a fine twofer CD that has all the songs from two of Jimmy Durante's record albums entitled Hello, Young Lovers and One Of Those Songs. Jimmy's gravelly voice was able to convey so much emotion when he sang; and even the lines he sometimes half-sang/half-spoke sound like poetry. The quality of the sound on this CD is excellent; and that artwork incorporates the artwork from the original record album releases. Excellent!

The album starts with Jimmy Durante singing "Hello, Young Lovers" from the musical entitled The King And I. The musical arrangement is very lush but it's Jimmy who takes and keeps the spotlight; he gives a great performance of this classic love song. "Try A Little Tenderness" gets a very sensitive treatment from Jimmy; he never skips a beat and I'm very impressed. Terrific! "Smile" from the movie Modern Times is a song partly written by Charlie Chaplin; and when Jimmy Durante sings "Smile" Chaplin would have been very proud! "Smile" is a major highlight of this album.

"This Is All I Ask" is a passionate ballad with a lush arrangement; the backup vocalists harmonize to perfection and that's grand. "The Glory Of Love" never sounded better than when Jimmy Durante sang it; this tune truly belongs to Jimmy Durante and just one listen proves it. I could never tire of hearing Jimmy Durante singing "The Glory Of Love." "You Can't Have Everything" is very pretty; and there's another gem in "The Time Is Now." "The Time Is Now" uses the strings thoughtfully and it all holds its own very well.

"One Of Those Songs" stuns me with its beauty; and "You're Nobody Till Somebody Loves You" sounds just great when Jimmy massages the lyrics to this timeless love song. I really like ""You're Nobody Till Somebody Loves You;" and "Bill Bailey (Won't You Please Come Home)" shines bright when Jimmy Durante dos this one up right! "(I Wonder) What Became of Life" gets the royal treatment from Durante who aces this effortlessly; and "Margie" is very easy on the ear, to say the least.

"Old Man Time" has a fine piano arrangement that complements Jimmy's vocals perfectly; and "We're Going UFO'ing" is essentially a novelty piece with lots of brass that Jimmy performs faultlessly. "Daddy (Your Mama Is Lonesome For You)" has Jimmy totally in charge. "Daddy (Your Mama Is Lonesome For You)" sports a very well done arrangement and Jimmy Durante never sings a superfluous note. "This Train" has a good backup chorus even though Jimmy didn't truly need it; and the album ends strong with Jimmy Durante performing "Mame." "Mame" comes from the movie of the same name and Jimmy sings this so well that it leaves you wanting more!

Jimmy Durante fans will certainly want this CD for their collections; it's all THAT good. It's also a great addition to your music collection if you like classic pop vocals. Newcomers to the artistry of Jimmy Durante might also want to get this album as a starter CD.

Thank you, Jimmy! We miss you!
