The Most Peaceful Ambient Record I've Heard
Submitted on: 2009-07-04
If your idea of good ambient music is a long, peaceful movement to which you can fall asleep, you've found it.

Along with the Pearl, and Ambient 2, this is an extremely tranquil disc. Whenever I want to pass out from a long day, this is the CD I put on. Unlike Harold Budd's the White Arcades or Eno's Ambient 4: On Land, Thursday Afternoon doesn't have any somber or ominous notes. Instead the sound is warmer and more upbeat, if you could ever use that term to describe ambient.

As mentioned above, the disc has but one track, which is what makes it great for sleeping or relaxation. Set it and forget it! On the other hand, the form doesn't lend itself to an introduction to ambient. I recommend Eno's Ambient 1: Music for Airports, or Budd's the White Arcades, if you're trying out the genre.

I have only experienced this record in the new remastered version. The sound quality leaves nothing to be desired, but there isn't much packaging to speak of--if that is important to you.

This is one of Eno's long form pieces. I happen to like it when I can float along with a piece without it stopping and changing every four minutes. This album clocks in at just over an hour. It's one continuous track that is ignorable yet engaging, depending on your focus. It doesn't have a high-tech sound to it like much more modern ambient work, but it still holds it's head above water and is a pleasure to listen to. I am glad to have come across Thursday Afternoon, and if you like Brian Eno, you'll probably want to pick this up.
LOVE LOVE LOVE this CD!

The way that I can best describe this musical recording is to say that Brian Eno subtly shifts you into a 'musical hologram' if you will; a wall of sound surrounds and emcompasses you, and the music becomes part of your experience.

It ia a CD I have played at least once weekly since the day of it's release, some time back in the mid 80's. GREAT meditation music!
My favorite Eno album so far

I have several Eno albums so far, and several Budd albums so far, probably about 8 or 9 albums between the two, and this could easily be my favorite one of them all. I haven't heard every single album by Eno yet but of the four or five that i have heard and own, this is my favorite. This is a one song, one hour album, that is nothing but just very pleasant and very soothing, easy going ambient music, performed by mostly acoustic piano and some synth in the background. Five stars.
Excellent

I bought this after listening to a sample on Amazon and was not disappointed. I think that it is even better than Discreet Music or Music for Airports, although those are also worth having. This CD is a good investment if you want something to relax to. It is great for reading or just destressing.
