NOT GOOD AT ALL Submitted on: 2009-07-02 |

| The presence of Maureen McGovern is not enough to take you out of deep sleep after listening to this dissapointing musical adaptation for the literary classic. The songs are too sweet to my taste, even to the point of being corny. The story line seemed to me quite pedestrian and boring and the characters never seem to take flight anywhere. Out of the musicals coming out lately, I would say this is one of the weakest and most boring ones of the present decade. Save your money and get SIDESHOW, NEXT TO NORMAL or THE MAN FROM OZ instead, three excellent choices from this decade. |

A classic interpretation of a classic Submitted on: 2007-12-10 |

"Little Women" is, of course, a historical part of Americana. A novel that spawned a sequel, a stage adaption that was revived four times and played countless others by amateur theaters, three movies, two television mini-series, an opera, and now a Broadway musical. While each interpretation has stressed its own special aspect of the original story, all have been interesting and well received.
The first time I listened to this recording, I followed the libretto (included)and lived the story as the music played. Today I listened again without benefit of the printed page, and found the music just as enjoyable as before. At some points, the story line did not come through perfectly; but vignettes stood out as I listened--especially the "meller-drammers" of Jo's vivid imagination.
While the album cover gives special notice to Maureen McGovern's "Marmee," this show clearly belongs to Sutton Foster's "Jo." And the vibrancy and enthusiasm of her voice are just right for the role.
I am looking forward to February, when a touring company will be in our town, and I can enjoy this even more with an in-person experience. |

Great arrangements. Submitted on: 2007-09-30 |

Except for the modernized logo on the front of the songbook, the musical arrangments of "Little Women" the opera, are in keeping with the stage production. I enjoyed is emensly, even though I was not an avid reader of Louisa May Alcott's original novel.
So, what I cannot understand, is how they use this new logo as if the opera is contemporary in setting and costumes. It is not. Aside from this personal peeve, the music is great. |

| Since seeing the show my daughter and I wanted this CD. It's very enjoyable. Maureen McGovern is wonderful and soulful. Sutton Foster is genius as always. A few decent audition pieces if you are looking as well. |

Love It!!! Submitted on: 2007-06-27 |

| My school is going to be doing this musical next spring so I bought this CD in order to prepare for it. I fell in love with the music. Much like the book, it is personal, tender, and real. Some songs are just so heartwrenching I want to cry (but maybe I am a little bit of a drama queen). Simply gripping, I would highly recommend this CD to anyone who loves musical theater. |
