Sufjan Steven's masterpiece! Submitted on: 2009-11-11 |
|
I'm going to keep this review pretty short and sweet. Many others have already said similar things here, but Sufjan Steven's Come on feel the Illinoise is quite simply one of the greatest music albums of the past decade. He's a brilliant songwriter, but also has such a great ear for interesting and original music compositions. Many of the tracks on the album end up with a very epic feel to them, but not in an overproduced manner. Sufjan poured his heart into creating this album and it shows.
Major highlights include: "Come on Feel the Illinoise!", "Chicago", "Decatur, or, Round of Applause...", "The Predatory Wasps...", "John Wayne Gacy, Jr.", "Jacksonville", "Casimir Pulaski Day", "They are Night Zombies!!...", "The Tallest Man, the Broadest Shoulders...". 22 tracks in total. What are you waiting for, hit "add to cart" already. |

Over rated Submitted on: 2009-11-05 |

Too much has already been said about how dull and over rated this album is. I find it ironic that the same critics who laugh about the efforts of Yes, ELP, and the Moody Blues to "compose" silly concept albums in the 1970s (I agree that a lot of these albums are silly) would think that the vision of a 50 CD album cycle about the states could be anything less then pseudo-intellectual I want to-be-Walt-Whitman garbage.
In all the songs sound like the type of thing that someone with a so-so command of an instrument would come up with; the lyrics are full of cheap stupid puns and allusions (how about that lovely Slade/Quiet Riot title), and how about that "natural 5/4 in some of the songs."
The lo-fi, single singer songwriter movement of the 2000s has had some good moments (i.e. Bon Iver, Iron and Wine), but this ain't one of them.

| Amazing record. Sound quality is beautiful, crystal clear. In my opinion, the only way to enjoy this music. |

Superb! Submitted on: 2009-08-21 |

| I believe this album is excellent. I can see how other people would not appreciate Steven's style, because it is quite unusual; but, I believe, that is why is it so excellent. It is different, each song has its own rhythm, flow, and beat. It does not follow the standard (and boring!) method of a song that we are all, unfortunately, so used to: verse A, chorus, verse B, chorus, bridge, chorus, chorus. It is difficult to pinpoint one favorite song because they are all great, and they each sound slightly different than the rest. The songs really are poems that are set to music and sung. Strongly recommend this if you are looking for something that will broaden your horizon and are looking for something outside of the top 40 on the radio! |

Great Album Submitted on: 2009-05-18 |

| Great Album from start to finish! I mean, you need to like Sufjan, whose music is so different and unconventional as it is. If you're not open to his brand of indi rock then you may not like it. BUT for those of us that enjoy progressive music, you'll love it! |
