Kudos to whoever did the remastering/remixing on this CD Submitted on: 2009-08-22 |

I'm reviewing the MP3 version of this collection. I downloaded it on a whim because it was on sale at a very low price, and I didn't know what to expect. I've never gotten around to buying any Buddy Holly music, so for me any collection is a good thing. But I've been terribly disappointed with the sound quality of several oldies reissues lately, so I held my breath when I started it up on my car stereo.
Ahhhh... It sounds wonderful. None of the extreme stereo separation that bugs the heck out of me, with instruments obviously coming out of the left front speaker of my car, and disembodied vocals from the right front speaker. No exaggerated percussion that takes over and distracts from the feel of the song.
The sound is clear and crisp, but well mixed together so you get one cohesive sound. The sound is so lush on True Love Ways and Raining In My Heart that I came close to tears. Every song is a keeper; I can play it start to finish without skipping one song. I'm a little too young to remember how this music sounded on the radio or on record when it first came out, so I can't say how authentic the production is. But I can say it sounds pretty darned good--not even considering the original recordings are now 50+ years old. |

2-major hit songs missing.......WHY? Submitted on: 2009-06-08 |
|
| The song list is great on this album but 2 songs ,which are BIG ONES where left off of this collection and should not have been. WHERE IS "REMINISCING and CRYING WAITING HOPEING" ? There much bigger and more famous then a few of the other songs on this collection.BIG MISTAKE made by this record label. REALLY, FIX IT. These 2 songs are the only thing worth adding to a SINGLE HITS DISC that isn't allready here. If the cd's get longer in length THAN ADD THESE 2 songs, or just replace them with a few of the lesser known hits. REALLY THIS ALBUM IS PERFECT...ONLY IF THESE 2 FAMOUS loved songs are added. IT is MUCH funner listening to ONE LONG LENGTH CD then 2 disc hit's collection's with FILLER. |

This is great! Submitted on: 2009-03-09 |

| Non-stop catchy tunes from the foundation of popular rock n roll. What's not to like? If you weed out all of the reviews here by people who reviewed based on what they wished the album was instead of what it is, this would have a solid 5 star rating. |

Yet another incomplete Buddy Holly compilation Submitted on: 2009-02-14 |
|
I've picked up just about every Buddy Holley (correct spelling on his tombstone in Lubbock, Texas, which I've visited) song released. I've done so by purchasing a number of releases. Probably the most comprehensive was the "Gold" collection, but it, too, didn't have everything. This has most of his hits, so if you want just his biggest hits, go for it, but you will be missing some real jewels that for one reason or another didn't get the airplay they deserved.
This year, 2009, marks the 50th anniversary of "The Day the Music Died." As sad as that day was, it also means that Holly's music now enters the public domain, so expect a bunch of half-baked "greatest hits compilations." My recommendation is to wait until someone like Bear Family, which has done such a fine job over the years collecting entire catalogs of various artists, comes out with a COMPLETE RECORDINGS OF BUDDY HOLLY. For now, I'd pass on this so-so compilation.
Even with all that I have, I'll be buying anything from Bear Family...
Oh, that'll be the day! |

A simply great CD if limited for room or budget! Submitted on: 2009-02-04 |

| I can't believe that they are actually bad reviews on this compilation. There are 26 classics here...all in excellent sound..on one disc. I also have the Buddy Holly Collection, an excellent 2 disc set that carries 50 songs. But if you are limited in space...want just one CD...and on a budget..this is the best deal out there. All of these songs have stood the test of time. It's amazing how many of his songs have been covered later on by such varied artists as Elvis, Peter & Gordon, Linda Ronstadt, Rolling Stones, The Beatles, James Taylor, Blind Faith (w/Clapton & Winwood) and others. He will prove to be an enduring songwriter of classic rock as well as a wonderful early rock band. He was only 22 when he perished on Feb. 3, 1959. I was 13 when I heard the news. One of the saddest days I can remember. He was a good kid too. |
