The "Donnie Darko" of Sound Submitted on: 2009-04-22 |
|
The Birthday Massacre is the first band I have heard to initiate a sound that I can easily deem as "Alice in Wonderland Goth." For me, their sound seems to have come from a darker '80s in a parallel universe. The ambiance of the music is in a league of its own--completely unique, completely alluring. The electronic melodies are so simple and yet so hauntingly delightful. The mixture of whispering within the singing also helps to set the surreal mood. If you listen to this album, you will know there is something special immediately and that it absolutely should not be overlooked. The best comparison to The Birthday Massacre is "Donnie Darko"; just as "Donnie Darko" is to movies, The Birthday Massacre is to music.
While I am only giving this album four stars, I do not want to detract from its powerful impact; the fifth star was only lost for me because of production quality and some pitchiness in the singing. I have also already listened to the newer album, "Walking With Strangers," which is a complete masterpiece. A progression of quality and exceptionality from one album to the next is grand.

Great CD from start to finish Submitted on: 2009-04-02 |

This CD has a certain mood that is reflected in everything from the cover-art to the very last song proving there are still bands that care about their art enough to craft a complete story instead of a collection of songs. From beginning to end each song meshes well with the previous one making it worthwhile to buy the entire CD rather than one or two songs.

Subversive ear candy Submitted on: 2009-01-23 |

| It would be easy to listen to a few minutes of TBM and dismiss them as just so much gothpop fluff, but that would be a mistake. This is a musically tight group that knows its stuff and subverts the pop aesthetic in such a deliciously evil and infectiously fun way that it's hard not to smile when listening to it. If Joss Whedon of Buffy fame were to create a goth group, one can imagine The Birthday Massacre would be the result. |

discovered them by accident on a Progressive Music forum,I'm HOOKED!!! Submitted on: 2008-12-17 |

While I was on a Progressive Music Site, DREAM THEATER, another great band but completely different type of music,
Someone sent a link for TBM on you tube. Before watching it I thought it was going to be some loudmouth Female singer GOTH group." nothing against Chibi, she is actually pretty cute and has a great voice!" Long and behold I was pleasently surprised. I am 38 years of age and grew up during the beginning of MTV, Video games, ect. I was completely amazed by all the different music styles that are mixed into their music. I then went to their website and checked out all their music. All I can say is that I am now a Huge fan and wondered how I haven't dicovered them sooner. I ordered Violet and Walking with Strangers from Amazon. Some of their songs would be great for music soundracks. I also love the Alice in wonderland type theme. Their album art is great,I think Its important for anyband to be Great Visualy as well as musically and they are great In both aspects. I would love to see this Band get more exposure so they could get the praise they deserve!!!!Looking forward to a new CD in 2009 and some more great Music from this wonderful Group!! Jim from NJ. |

A Passage Way Submitted on: 2008-04-11 |

Violet is an inspired crafting of all that can make our ears a special portal to the mind. Carrying both the darkness and hope that life must share, their soundscapes seductively brush those hidden corners of latent emotions and shadowed images. Indulge with measured doses and you will be permitted to restart the journey at will.
