 Too much packaging, not enough in disc quality for the money.

I purchased The Complete Recordings of the Fellowship of the Ring essentially because I wanted to hear the rest of the music that was not included on the single CD version of the soundtrack. Like most of the LOTR products, I find them pricey and with a lot of premium packaging that I find unnecesary. I would have preferred a Super Audio CD (SACD) stand-alone option with better sound quality (88/96khz/24-bit) or better yet, a Dolby True HD or DTS Master Audio option as a stand-alone product (no CDs) with lossless audio than either the CDs or DVD-A (only 48khz/24-bit) recording provided in this product. Could also skip most of the premium packaging to lower the cost.
A couple SACDs or one Dolby TrueHD or DTS Master-Audio disc with a basic case and booklet for about half the price would be much better alternatives for audiophiles more interested in high-quality recordings of music they like rather than the premium packaging.
I wouldn't be surprised to find another version of these recordings from New Line (such as I suggested above) but for an even higher price. New Line seems especially intent on soaking LOTR fans for every last dollar. |

 Film Score Perfection!

| I resisted buying this for the longest time, since I already own the single disc soundtrack that came out with the film's release. I just saw "Fellowship" with a live orchestra last night at Radio City Music Hall in N.Y.C. and this item was available for purchase. I bought it without hesitation and do not regret it! Excellent music start to finish. The only regret I did have was the long line after the show to get Howard Shore's autograph... it was late and I couldn't wait. Oh well, maybe next year at the live orchestral performance of "The Two Towers"!!! |

A rare instant where you can hear the soundtrack of a major film as it was originally composed and recorded before it was edited and cut to fit the various scenes of the film .
Packaging was slighty damaged and shipping was a tad long but otherwise I am very satisfied . |

| I heard an excerpt of Lord of the Rings: Fellowship... on the radio & rushed home to order. The set is much darker than the excerpt I heard, so a little disappointed there. While listening in the car, there are some areas that are very soft and hard to hear, while others just blast out the windows. I enjoy the complexity of the music overall, but probably wouldn't buy another set like this. |
