Wonderful!!!

(Morph The Cat) - Take a straight "G Major" chord, put in a "children's song" like, 'sing-a-long' melody, harmonize with a 7th, a 6th & a 9th (OK its basically a G13 chord), let the bass line tease its way around the tonic... and there you have the "A" verse section.... its very simple AND uniquely brilliant. Go to the relative minor with the same treatment... "B" verse; well, you get the idea.... it is simple, but molding (or morphing) something so simple into something so complex is the genius. Of course when you get to the chorus where he goes to the dominant (or the 5) chord, with a slew of accidentals, it really does get a little more complex... I just think Fagen is doing something more songwriters should a least try to do... be fresh... melodically and harmonically (don't forget rhythmically). I am SOOOOoooo tired of the "re-hash" methodology in pop music... another sign of "dumbing down".

(Great Pagoda Of Funn) - This is an amazing song. It has everything. I honestly get close to weeping at the chorus. It really squeezes the emotion. It kind of oddly reminds me of something Duke Ellington might have written, had he lived in these days.

(Mary Shut The Garden Door) - This song perfectly captures the emotion of "Honey, I heard a noise downstairs"... the music reflects the lyrics.

Thats just picking out a couple of tunes, but the whole album is wonderful. This would be required listening to anyone in my class... if I taught a class. Its interesting, intelligent, humorous, grooving, moving, inspiring... the production is all around top-drawer, the performances are more than impressive, and this album will live as a milestone. Hey Donald, you just keep on raising the bar buddy... I'm with you!
Nice sounding DVD-A & decent music...

I think this album needs a fair amount of listening to appreciate (I HOPE!). It's better with each playing so I guess I'm still undecided but generally liking the music. DEFINITELY not as accessible as Kamakiriad.

Audio quality is great. Fagen's 'dry' vocals are very crisp. The surround mix is not overdone and is very clear. If you like Donald Fagen and surround music, this disk is worth getting.

He is a true pioneer in the kingdom of hepcats Donald Fagen along with his partner in their original creativity of cool, offers a variety of imaginative wonderous lyrical hipness that takes you on a journey with every song he writes. His story telling is superb His music is down right stylish funky and just plain cool and Fagen along with Becker when together are down right magical ive been a Dan Fan for over 25 years have alot of their music and seen them in concert twice. Fagens the Nightfly was incredible but morph the cat definately tops that the whole album is great! Steely dans lyrics and music are definately for the creative mind a thinking mans musician and lyricist thanks for bringing me much joy and some pretty cool days and nights listening to your music Fagen the hippest cat. thanks, Tony kent, ohio 38 years young

As always Donald Fagen delivers the sounds, the images and the crispness that are his trademark. The song 'What I do', which is a conversation with the now departed Ray Charles is rich and sexy. And, the title track, 'Morph the Cat' -- "Christmas without the chintzy stuff" a line that held amazing clarity for me as I got the cd mid November. While driving in my car at night gazing at all the light-up Santas' positioned a foot away from the 3 Wise Men and the inflatable reindeer, Fagen said it all in that one line. Get the CD. If you're a Fagen or Dan fan, you know what you're looking for and the CD delivers

Some artists have a decade of definitive work that they tour for the rest of their lives( if their lucky, and talented enough to produce it in the first place.Outside the the guys Rudy Van Gelder recorded, only Bob Dylan ,Donald Fagen and his co-defendent Walter Becker inhabit that frame it's not what you want, it's what they do .You pays your money .Is this record any good ?,yeah . This is'nt a lifestyle accessory, before or after the fact. So what is it ?. I could tell you about contrapuntal cadences,City Lights lyrical resonance ,arrangements that give up their flavours of the Blanton/Webster band with focused detail, are you any the wiser ?.Could you do better than "A Harlem Airshaft "?. No,but you could buy "Morph
The Cat".P.S. contained within these grooves lies the elixir of hipness .
