 Wasn't sure what to expect.

This is the first disc I've picked up from this band, I picked it up because an ancient friend of mine told me an equally long time ago that this band was good. At the time I was no longer into death metal, so I didn't really pay them much mind. I picked this gem up a few weeks ago, and at first I was not 100% sure where I placed my like or dislike. It isn't at all what you'd expect, they have a slightly mainstream sound, and while I say that, it is subtle. They use some usual chord progressions, but as a rule, they tend to be very original takes on those chord structures. If I was to pick another album that this one reminds me of, it would be Poisonblack's "Lust Stained Despair."
The death metal twists aren't absent from this album--but they are just that. "twists." There is no double-bass assaults, and many of the keyboards are a bit more 'progressive' in influence, but I'm a guy who also likes Communic and Nevermore, so that's not a bad thing in my book. There's also some non-traditional instruments, like flute on "Leaves Scar," which is easily one of my favorites. These guys are very open-minded on their music, and it is truly--amorphis--in the strictest definition of that word.
If you're a strict death-metal head, there isn't anything for you here. If you like beauty with your music, you should really love this band. |

Eclectic Prog-Rock/Metal Masterpiece

I had heard of Finland's Amorphis for years, and had often heard them described as one of the originators of melodic death metal, as well as being a band who likes to experiment with folk, '70s-style progressive elements, and other "non-metal" stylistic devices. I also had read quite a few reviews indicating that they were all over the map depeding on which album you listened to, which is fairly common for bands who like to experiment with their sound...
After listening to some samples of this incredible album, I had to pick it up on amazon, and I highly recommend this release to any fan of either metal or prog-rock; so well does this Finnish band straddle the line between the two without sounding contrived. Using both melodic vocals as well as a "gruff" death-metal style, sophisticated arrangements incorporating folk and world music and the progressive tendencies of such bands as Pink Floyd or Porcupine Tree, as well as modern metal and rock, this album is absorbing and addictive from start to finish. Lyrically, they also manage to be quite poetic and interesting. I'm off to pick up the new release from this band and explore their back catalog....highly recommended! |

| Amorphis is cool. they really hooked up with a killer metal label. (Relapse is cool too!)these guys have an eclectic mix of sounds on this cd. my favorite song has to be "House Of Sleep", and the video for it is on the Nuclear Blast website. Amorphis has a new album out soon, so check it out. |

I've been listening to these guys for like ten years and this may be the best thing they've done. This is one of the best albums I've heard in a while.

| because bands like Amorphis go completely under the radar. Randomly one day I was actually on myspace browsing some music and ran across this band and listened to "brother moon" and it blew me away. Great instrumentation, mixture of vocal stylings, it had it all. Then I purchased this CD and the whole thing is good. This band is classified as death metal by some, but they really aren't. On occasion they have growls but topically it has nothing to do with it and the instrumentation is far beyond that of other death metal bands. Yes, from what I hear they used to be like that but they've always been musically different. I would probably classify them in the progressive category like Dream Theater, except at times rougher and definitely shorter songs. Great buy though. My only complaint is the bonus track but I'm not going to dock off points just because of that. |
