terrific tunes from the '60s, February 27, 2008
This review is from: Casey Kasem Presents: America's Top 10 Through the Years - The 1960s (Audio CD)
Casey Kasem: America's Top 10 Through Years - The 60's gives us plenty to enjoy! We get twenty super hits on a single CD--very nicely done! The artwork and the sound are great.
The track set starts off with The Supremes at their very best doing "Baby Love;" this fantastic arrangement keeps the vocals in the spotlight. The percussion, drums and more carry the awesome melody very well. The Monkees follow with their "I'm A Believer;" they sing and play this number like the pros that they were! "I'm A Believer" has a great chorus and the harmony is very solid.
Listen also for Martha & The Vandellas to perform their joyful "Dancing In The Street." "Dancing In The Street" has that mid to late `60s flavor when they sing of dancing in the streets and just grabbing a dance partner from the crowd. The Yardbirds do a great job on "For Your Love;" this tune has minor keys to make it all the better. The Yardbirds harmonize to perfection, too!
The Mamas & The Papas do their incredible "Monday, Monday;" they always sound great but whenever I hear this tune I just have to smile--it's THAT good. The Mamas & The Papas were a huge sensation in their day. There's also The Lovin' Spoonful doing their gritty rock song entitled "Summer In The City;" the special effects are excellent on "Summer In The City."
Otis Redding turns in a strong performance with his "(Sittin' On) The Dock Of The Bay;" I am sure a lot of young people in the late 60s could identify with this tune if they were disillusioned with California not solving all their problems. The Beach Boys also never sounded better on "I Get Around:" they harmonize so well and the electric guitars work great for this tune! In addition, there's "Respect" from Aretha Franklin. "Aretha sang this tune with all her might, passion and soul and it shows when you hear it.
Sonny & Cher do a cute number with "I Got You Babe;" and the CD ends strong with The Troggs performing "Wild Thing." "Wild Thing" is one of those `60s songs that will never be forgotten.
All in all, this album gives us a lot of music to enjoy over and over again. I love this album. This is a strong single CD retrospective of just some of the best from the `60s. Casual fans of this music may want this to avoid buying numerous albums just for the sake of an individual tune here and there on other CDs.
