Astounding value, but 5 items are missing Submitted on: 2009-10-27
This is an absolutely astounding value -- the works of Bach, performed very well, for only about 70c (US) per CD! Don't just stand there -- buy it!
Be advised however that a handful of items are missing: First of all, although the documentation mentions the St. Mark Passion (CD V-22 and V-23) and the St. Luke Passion (CD V-24 and V-25), these items are not actually included in the set -- they are not even listed in the directory of vocal works on the inside lid (and these CDs contain other selections).
Secondly, CD III-23 should contain Cantatas #178, 146 and 27 -- the documentation, cover index, CD jacket and the CD itself all list these cantata numbers as the contents of this CD. Instead, I found that this CD contains Cantatas #75, 59, 21; indeed, its contents are identical to that of CD IV-20. So in other words, Cantatas #178, 146 and 27 are nowhere in the collection, possibly due to an error in production. This is the case in my set, but I suspect that many other sets may have the same flaw.
Aside from these glitches, the set is very much worth the purchase price. Thanks to the artists and to Brilliant Classics for making this available.

Delivery was timely, but the CD box was damaged: corner wear, and a two-inch tear along the hinge of the box lid. I lay this at the feet of Amazon as they did not package the CD into its shipping carton protectively at all.
Most of the CDs are DDD; those that are not are ADD.
Of course I have not listened to all the CDs yet. The first Brandenberg CD I listened to sounded trebly to me, but maybe this is the piece itself or the period instruments. The one I am listening to now sounds great, except I wish I could hear the excellent harpsichord playing more clearly. It is as if the harpsichord is in the back of the room and the microphones are up front with the traverso. One of the reasons I went with this Bach set is that it was recorded using harpsichord not piano; I'm a little disappointed. Faint harpsichord is a particular travesty for a Brandenberg concerto as Bach wrote these as a 'job application'. Those who claim to know believe Mr. Bach wrote the harpsichord parts for these concertos exactly as he would have played it to impress his prospective employers. This was kinda unusual as keyboard musicians of the time were expected to ad lib upon the written music liberally. Ya gotta have the harpsichord up front for a Brandenberg concerto!
But this is just the second CD, so we'll see. I hope to update this review as I proceed through the set.
Buy it for the Bach, not the box! Submitted on: 2009-09-18
This review is not music related, it is only intended to let future buyers know that the display box may not arrive in the condition that they would hope.
I had to make two returns before I "settled" for the condition of the third order. The problem is mishandling of the item BEFORE it gets shipped. All of the three sets that I examined had box cutter gouges in the same area on the back of the box, and all of the corners were scratched and dented. The damages were to varying degrees. On a less expensive item I may have not gone through the trouble of all the returns.
The Mozart set that I purchased almost a year ago arrived in better condition the first time around.
Also of note, the box is larger than the Mozart set because the Bach set contains cardboard sleeves, while the Mozart set has paper envelopes. Many of the CDs in the Bach set were protruding out of their sleeves when I opened the box.
Unbeatable Price for a Brilliant Classic Submitted on: 2009-09-18
Though it has gone up in price a bit since I bought it, at $100 for 155 CDs you pretty much know you're getting great value for your money. It took me about a month of intense listening to get through the entire collection, but it was definitely worth it. By and large the performances are decent to good, with a few really great ones. The cantatas, spanning sixty CDs, form the meat of the collection, and they alone are probably worth the price if you want to have the full set. They are admittedly not the very highest quality recordings of most of these pieces, but they are definitely adequate, with some great baroque singing by soprano Ruth Holton. They are also the only complete digital recording of the cantatas (this entire collection is digital). The organ works are all performed adequately, if not in a particularly inspired fashion, by Hans Fagius, and the keyboard works are done quite well (though if you're not a fan of harpsichord, I'd advise you to steer clear of these recordings, as all keyboard parts are done exclusively on that instrument). The secular cantatas and other vocal works (the Passions, Mass in B Minor, independent chorales, etc.) are by and large done very well. The orchestral works are mostly extracted from other collections, and I can't really comment on these performances except to say that if you don't have them already (and there's a good chance you don't have, say, the complete Viola di Gamba sonatas), they are definitely worth your while. Overall, with such a fantastic price and so much content, even if the performances were bad or mediocre--which is doing them a huge disservice--it would still be worth a five star rating. The fact that they're not is almost a bonus. I encourage anyone getting into Bach to buy this set--remember, for the price of ten Bach albums on iTunes, you get one hundred fifty five here, so if you think you're going to purchase ten Bach albums anyway, you might as well get this instead!

En verdad, cada día me sorprende más la estupenda labor de esta joven disquera, que se preocupa por compilar y editar obras musicales dificiles de conseguir o en su defecto, a un precio muy elevado. Todos las colecciones de obras completas (Bach, Beethoven, Mozart, Hayd, Chopin, etc) son joyas practicamente imposibles de encontrar en este mismo formato con otras disqueras. El sonido es bueno y el trabajo artístico en las portadas tambén me parece maravilloso. Si usted es amante del periodo barroco, no pierda la oportunidad de escuchar obras maestras como: El arte de la fuga, El clave bien temperado, la Misa en Si menor, los Motetes, las sonatas para violín, las Suites francesas e inglesas, las Variaciones de Goldberg, la Pasión según San Mateo, entre otras tantas aportaciones del prolífico J.S. Bach. Ampliamente recomendable.
