Apocalyptic Death Metal Staple Submitted on: 2009-09-02 |

Asphyx are, without any doubt, one of the most important death metal bands to ever come out of the Netherlands scene. While people have hailed their debut, The Rack, for being a pioneer in the death-doom sound, I prefer this. Not that their debut was bad by any ways, but I feel that they managed to build upon their sound with this.
The production is beefy and dynamic, which is splendid to hear when you've got an album like this. Martin Van Drunen's vocal performance sends chills down your spine while the guitars deliver crushing and thrashy riffs to the overall sound. And riffs you will receive, as Asphyx does nothing but deliver the goods throughout.
This is some top-notch classic death metal that doesn't deserve to be this overlooked. I highly recommend this if bands like Bolt Thrower and Incantation are right up your alley. Hail the Last One on Earth! |

| Asphyx should have godfather status right up there with the Florida greats like Death, Morbids and Obitiuary and the Scandanavian greats like Entombed and Dismember. Formed by Martin Van Drunen when he left Pestilence this band is pedigree stock. This is the last one with Van Drunen but the band continued without him after this. This is old school quality sound remeniscent of Obituary style.Sludgey and distorted but very powerful. On the musician scale again very much like Obitiuary or Entombed.Far from tech-metal This is very raw and basic, mostly mid pace tempos. And if your familiar with Van Drunen's demonized throat screams he has never sounded so forceful and scary.I gave only 4 stars instead of 5 just because it does get repetetive with the same brutal attack on every cut. Not much variety but the onslaught is welcomed. If you think you are a death metal specialist and you dont have any Asphyx you better get crackin' and get them all.Essential part of Death Metal history. |

HEAVY!!! Submitted on: 2007-10-30 |

| This album has got to be one of the heaviest discs ever recorded. Punishing riffs, pummeling drums and sick vocals(best described as a cross between Death & Obituary) make this a must-own for any fan of classic Death Metal or just heavy music in general. |
