Old School hip hop

Classic old school party album. A great listen that brings back the old school hip hop days of the late 80's and early 90's.
Golden Age Gem (4 stars)

In 1988, Philly-raised DJ Cash Money garnered an unprecedented amount of respect and acclaim with his devastating skills on the turntables. He went on to win DMC titles such as the "Greatest DJ in the World". Alongside Cash Money was the very skilled rapper - Marvelous; who sounds like a cross between early Will Smith and LL Cool J. In fact, the album reminded me quite a bit of DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince "Rock The House" (1987). Like that record, this is an explosive and entertaining ride of tomfoolery and hilarity that never lets up.

It's definitely apparent that Cash Money & Marvelous have all the tools to execute an excellent party album, and they don't tread much (if at all) into other territory. The skills on display here are excellent. Cash Money throws down some serious cuts, juggles, and ill scratch techniques. Some of the time, Marvelous acts as the hype-man for Cash Money much like The Fresh Prince has done for DJ Jazzy Jeff on their albums. And Cash Money is arguably as dope as Jeff. However, despite their solid connection, much of the album remains to be the same formula throughout, and some of the cuts never gel into cohesive songs. My two favorite cuts are "Time Is Up" and "A Real Mutha For Ya" (which happens to sample the same loop as EPMD's "Let The Funk Flow" recorded the same year). The devastating turntable cuts would be the comical "Ugly People Be Quiet" (both mixes), "The Mighty Hard Rocker" & "The Music Maker" (among others). Another favorite would have to go to "Play It Kool". "Marvelous' Drawers" was also a funny tune.

Overall, this is a solid album all around. And apparently fairly slept-on. Is this essential hip-hop listening? Not necessarily; but longtime fans of hip-hop and it's golden age will find it to be a very worthwhile find. Even if the content is primarily narrow in focus, the masterful skills they brought to hip-hop are undeniable.
Classic

This is a Classic!!!!!!!!!!!! When it first came out in the late 80's it was only avilable on tape, but now that it was re-issued on cd I pre-ordered it. What more could you ask for Cash on the cuts and Marv on the rhymes. Cash is one of the best Dj's ever to grace the turntables. Ugly people be quite, Times up and The mighty hard rocker showcases Cash $ skillz. I once had a cash$ mixtape back in the day were he and Marv were doing "If you find a ugly women" live at a party here in philly and it was nice to hear it on there offical album.
WELL WORTH THE WAIT
