Huzzah for Homework
Submitted on: 2009-08-24
Deas Vail is the kind of music I listen to when I'm doing homework. Not too loud, not quiet enough to put you to sleep. Very rhythmic, with drums that do more than just bang on the cymbals. The band uses a lot of piano with some guitar work to create a sort of ambient feel something along the lines of Lost Ocean or maybe even some of Mae's older, piano-laced songs. The most signature element is surely Wes Blaylock's vocals, which shift seamlessly between a standard tenor range and a soaring falsetto that sounds surprisingly natural. My personal favorite track is probably "Lover's Charm", which happens to showcase Blaylock's singing ability quite well. One word of warning: listeners not used to hearing men sing this high might find it a little creepy at first, but rest assured, you will get used to it quickly.
Talk about being blown away!!!

WOW!!! I was seriously blown away by Wes Blaylock's amazing vocal talent. This is one of the most unique indie bands I have ever heard as well. I love them!!! If you are an indie rock fan, and you want to be blown away by absolutely incredible vocal talent, Deas Vail is the group for you. I love their name too. It is Latin for "Humble Servant of God." But man, If I hadn't read about them before I listened to them, I might have thought that it was a girl singing on some parts of some songs. This is definitely one of the best debut albums I've ever heard.

I was completely blown away by this album. I've listened to a lot of fantastic artistic indie bands (from copeland to the appleseed cast to anberlin) and I've never heard anything quite this good. If there's one word I could use to describe this album it would probably be "pure," it's just so original and has both amazingly beautiful and gritty moments. This is probably the best rock that includes pianos I've ever heard.

A couple highlights would be:

1. "Surface" - They seamlessly flow from gritty almost punk power chords into piano and then back again without ever feeling like a punk band.

2. "Shoreline" - This mostly piano song is probably one of the most beautful songs you will hear in a very long time. Especially when the female vocalist begins singing in the middle of the louder part.

This is just an incredible album and I would recommend it to ANYONE whether you be a die-hard "indie and indie alone" fan or someone who gets all their new bands from the local radio (if that's the case, I pity you and you really should get into this kind of music)
Fresh, Exciting Melodic Rock

The first song I heard from Deas Vail was a demo of "Anything You Say". It struck me in such a fresh new way. A watershed moment for me. It is my favorite song and favorite album now.

This independent act has delivered the finest debut of the year so far. The defining element of Deas Vail is the incredible falsetto of classically trained vocalist Wes Blaylock. The album is a great collection of pop rock tunes that are mainly piano driven, but the electric guitars do come out on a few songs. Case in point, "Surface", which is one of the best cuts, and features very cool background instrumentation, as do many other selections on the album. Another outstanding track is "Rewind", which finds Blaylock singing "This is how it feels to break up soundwaves, and fall into a quiet place..." Other standouts are "Anything You Say", "Life In These Little Boats", and "This Place is Painted Red." This quintet is dripping with musical talent, and you won't be disappointed.
