Customer Reviews of This Album/CD

well, I like it

I'd not heard of this young lady, and bought the cd purely on speculation, recognizing the names Sergio Mendes and Toots Thielemans, who worked with her on it, and recognizing two songs: "Moon River" and "Alfie." Much to my delight, I really like this music. The opening piece "If you went away" is a wonderful song, as is the really haunting "Rio de maio" composed by and sung in duet with Brasilian Ivan Lins. My reservation is that I wish there were more tracks...it's over far too soon.
My Favorite!

I own a lot of CDs. but this one by Jane Monheit is my favorite. Turn on the water fountain, pour yourself a glass of good wine, settle back in a comfortable chair and be swept away by the magnificent voice and captivating style of a truly wonderful female vocalist. This is the CD I use to measure all the rest...LOP

I first heard Jane's voice on a local light Jazz station and added her to my "wish list", then purchased her CD "Taking a Chance on Love". As a lover of Samba and Bossa Nova and long time fan of Elise Regina it was a no brainer to follow that one up with "Surrender" when I saw that she sang Brazilian style music. I was not dissappointed in the cd, for me there was not a bad track on it. As a long time Sergio Mendez fan "So Many Stars" quickly became one of my favorite tracks, I hadn't really appreciated the depth of that song's lyrics until I heard Jane sing it.
Absolutely Love it!

What can I say? I absolutely love every track on the disc. The entire disc contains lovely examples of Ms. Monheit's beautiful voice, and the songs themselves take the listener to another level when listening. This disc is the best yet. I love this womens voice and style far better than the majority of female songstresses who somehow receive far more publicity for lessor talent than Ms. Monheit has displayed for the last few years. All I can imagine is the power of PR over substance is what makes for a 'Popular Media recognized' Star. However, due to her work, I shall forever believe that Jane Monheit is, and should be recognized as among the top five of the living 'Female' songstresses of 'any style of music'.
One of the finest albums ever

I have been a fan of Jane Monheit since I heard her first album. Every time I listen to this CD I say to myself that I have absolutely nothing to add or suggest - on the contrary I just enjoy listening and learning. I loved the video "Live from the Rainbow Room," where you can see Jane Monheit as a formidable communicator as well as a wonderful singer. But this is the best as an album.

There is only one song I would pick out from her other albums to insert in this, my favourite album, and that is "In the Still of the Night" from "Taking a Chance on Love." (If you never were jolted by the poetry of Cole Porter you'll be knocked over with her interpretation.)

Back to the subject. "Surrender" by Peter Eldridge is a sublime soap opera of a song that unexpectedly turns a world of dish-washing and household chores into magnificence and transcendence. How beautiful - but only if Jane Monheit sings it.

I also give a constellation of stars to the interpretation of Ivan Lins's wonderful "Rio de Maio" (sung with Ivan Lins). Magic.

One other note from a musician who simply cannot play certain kinds of music for whatever reason: when Jane Monheit jumps from Jerome Kern to Bill Evans to Stevie Wonder to Joni Mitchell, she makes the song totally her own. (If you have ever heard Ella Fitzgerald sing Tom Jobim, you'll know what I'm getting at.) Jane Monheit's talent is uncanny.

If you don't know Jane Monheit, start with this CD. Then you'll want to discover the rest.

Jane Monheit is the best and, in my opinion, this is the best of her best.
