Customer Reviews of This Album/CD

Brubeck makes Bach sound smooth and silky. Plus Live Blue Rondo ala Turk Orchestral
Submitted on: 2008-03-02
Lucky enough to hear this at a friends who got the import.
It's a very satisfying CD, as Brubeck is one who was trained classically, and has always had at least some toes, if not a foot, in the long hair tradition.
The orchestra and live performers I cannot say I could identify, since I only heard it in passing. But Sony lists it as:
"The Dave Brubeck Quartet featuring the Bach Collegium Munich in concert in Frankfurt's Alte Oper on 13th November 2004. Brubeck presented a blend of jazz and classical music sometimes swinging, sometimes cool and jazzy. Fugues and the blues, waltzes and ragtime forge a unique alliance."
But since nobody else has written on it, being an import,
let me just say as a guy who grew up with The Dave Brubeck Quartet, and knows the stuff very well, has the box set...
this would be a worthy addition to any Brubeck Collection.
Dave has, like a fine wine, grown more rich with age.
The Blue Rondo ala Turk, and a pretty outre Take Five...Morello-like drum solo, with more muscle,...live..are exciting renditions. The audience is large and effusive. The sax player makes me think of Phil Woods, but I can't say I know who it is. Sorry I can't quickly get the info.

So, if you love Dave Brubeck. and remember the beauty of his renditions of West Side Story and Gone with the Wind and his own classics... let's say he's done it for Bach now, too. Live, beautifully recorded, and it's a shame it's not out in the USA.
