Splendid yet overlooked Submitted on: 2009-10-09 |

After an eight year absence, Paula Cole returns with her most recent album, "Courage". This album is different from all of her previous efforts in many ways. For starters, it's noticeably more pop oriented. Secondly, she's happy, which is unusual for a Paula Cole album. Thirdly, she goes into uncharted territory- like Brazilian music and jazz, for example. The one problem I do have with this album is that she pretty much handed over the creative control on this album. She co-wrote all but three songs (she's usually the sole writer), she plays piano only on the final track while the other songs were handled by session musicians, and she doesn't even produce the album. Those duties are assumed by Blood Sweat & Tears founding member, Bobby Colomby, who does such a geat job, you wouldn't know he was behind the boards until you read the liner notes.
"Courage" has a who's who in the liner notes regarding the appearances, mostly from the world of jazz and jazz fusion. Chris Botti, Jeff Lorber, Herbie Hancock, Mark Goldenberg (who also played on Q-Tip's 2008 album, "The Renaissance") and David Foster, just to name a few. I think this album was very accomplished as well as very slept on, and I highly recommend it to anyone who's a Paula Cole fan. |

| Even though this is a different style of music for Paula Cole, with that unmistakable voice and storytelling lyrics, it's still PAULA COLE. I've grown to appreciate her music after 4 albums and what I love about Paula is the depth of her music. It's like I'm hanging on to every word and lyric of her songs because i appreciate what she has to say and relate alot to her life's journey. Her songs tend to be insightful and spiritual and because God is a part of my life, the words hit home. "Courage" isn't as God-based as "Amen", but alot of the songs deal with spiritual growth and recognizing Jesus as our personal savior and I'm so glad Paula included another song mentioning her faith in God. The first song picks up where "Amen" left off, with "Comin' Down". It's one of m' fave tracks and is standard Paula Cole. I also love "Lovelight" where Paula sings about love and is a positive song of spirit and strenth. This cd pretty much remains on a positive note but there's some somber angst ridden tracks for the goth in all of us. "Lonelytown" is a dark mystical track, the instrumentation is a different genre of music that I haven't heard from Paula and takes a while to get used to with her type of voice. I wish there were more upbeat songs on "Courage" but you can't expect an artist to repeat themselves on every album. This time Paula went more piano and strings, which I'm not a total fan of. I could have done without the male voice in "Hard To be Soft" and the last song "Until I Met You" sounds like a demo for some other singers who do Broadway-type ballads. Paula's voice isn't meant for this kind of music, the singing from both her and the male singer border on atrocious. In other words, I HATE that song. I think it's the worst Paula Cole song ever. But ending on a positive note, I love the lyricist in Paula Cole. Her voice, with all of it's imperfections makes her music unique. She dares to experiment with different styles of music, ever changing but remaining the same. A true artist. Courage. |

Not her best work Submitted on: 2009-01-28 |

| I am a fan of her previous work but this did not live up to her reputation. The songs were slow and boring. Not enough energy or freshness. |

smooth, calm, jazzy; completely different Paula Cole Submitted on: 2008-07-24 |

I have been quite follower of her
borrowed "This Fire", I was blown away by her fierce style, and bought it after listened
the second one, "Amen" came with a band, a little different, but still fierce
but this one after 7 years, she is COMPLETELY DIFFERENT, very smooth, calm, like a woman went through several years (getting married, being a pregant)
the first one, "coming down", the second one "lovelight", and third one "El Greco", give me a warm and fuzzy welcome
found several favorite tracks: the first three tracks I mentioned, and "I want to kiss you", like the first three
"lonely town", "14", "until I meet you" can feel the Jazz style of her
I am picky on buying new CD, but I recommend this one, esp for Paula Cole followers |
