Relax and gather some Moss ... Submitted on: 2009-01-19 |

Those of you who have followed Ian Moss's career since his Cold Chisel days in the 70's and 80's and stayed with him as he made the transition to solo performer will hear the same dulcet voice and passionate, exuberant musicianship which has made Mossy one of Australia's most respected and beloved musicians.
Unusually for the times, and unlike so many of his peers, he hasn't switched musical styles like clothes as fashions and fads have come and gone. Nor has he mindlessly regurgitated the same music he started out with due to an inability to grow and develop, or a desire to rest on his laurels. He has done what all the true virtuosos have done; followed his muse and played the only music which he could play with integrity - his own music, music which has very much its own developmental force and direction.
But with age and experience has come breadth, depth and maturity of musical character, bringing with it the potential for a finely turned, skilfully balanced expression of the wide-ranging influences to which he has been subjected in a life lived to the full; and that potential has been realised in this album.
Here again for your listening pleasure is the same old Mossy we have come to know and love: the quiet, modest Aussie 'guitar hero' acting as straight man and foil to Jim Barnes's wild stage antics, then the intensely musical solo artist with very much his own blend of vocal magic and guitar-playing almost Hendrix-like in its impromptu fluidity, inspired originality, humour and passion.
But wrapped around this solid core is a new level of sophistication and musical discrimination which shows him in a clearer, crisper and somewhat unexpected light. His voice has, if possible, grown even sweeter with the passing years, and his vocal and guitar skills have been continuously refined over time. In recognition of this, the material which has been chosen for this album showcases both guitar and voice in a more subtly polished form than ever before, particularly highlighting his voice in an unusually varied collection of superbly sung tracks.
If you found Petrolhead too noisy, this album is for you; if you did like Petrolhead, it's probably still for you. If you found Matchbook too commercial, this album is for you; if you loved Matchbook, it's definitely still for you. If there weren't enough catchy tunes on Worlds Away for your taste, you'll find them here; if you treasured Worlds Away, you'll treasure this album as well. If Six Strings was 'too acoustic' for you, or Ian Moss Live was too 'live' ... Well, you get the picture ... It's for anyone who likes virtuoso rock which has grown up without growing old, and it's not 'too' anything (except possibly too underrated on Amazon ;-).
Wake up America! Australia's calling, and it sounds finger-pickin' good! |
