Let it grow on you Submitted on: 2009-04-10 |

I suppose I am not different than many Etheridge fans. I came to her, when she was a guitar slinging rockstar that was all guts and glory on stage. Watching her sing "I am the only one" from the Woodstock stage i feel in love with her raw emotional power, and was forever changed. When she brokedown in 99 I felt her pain, and when she resurfaced with new Skin in 2002 I felt our rock diva was ready to reclaim her rightful throne as our immortal rock songstress. Then she got lucky, and was happy, and while I love my rock goddess happy, I also needed a little angst to get me through the night. Thank you for Breath. Shaken but not moved, we saw her triumph over the darkness her body possessed, and we all breathed a sigh of relief.
"Awakening" was just that, an awakening. At first I hated this cd. I listened to it through twice and put it in my cd case to be forgotten and never listened to again. It was too emotional, too spiritual, too pretensious. Then a few months later I was taking a short road trip and mistakenly grabbed the cd, and while on the open road I fell in love with this album. Etheridge shows an emotional rawness that only comes with age and experience. I am sorry I didn't give the CD the respect it deserved.
"California" is a classic rock anthem that is sure to be concert favorite, it follows the unmistakable Etheridge guitar chord pattern that she is famous for. "An Unexpected Rain" was the Etheridge song I had waited years for her to write and the guitar riffs were hypnotic. "God is in the people" is a Joplinesc story song, she opens it with a monologue that follows into a great ballad.
I hope that if like me you have heard this album and dismissed it as a whining confessional of raw emotion you will take a day, hop in the car and give this album the attention it deserves |

| Melissa just keeps getting better. It's always great when she puts out a new cd but when it's a cd/dvd it's even better. Great music, great video, what else can I say...other than I can't wait to see her live in concert again. |

Raw and Powerful Submitted on: 2008-10-30 |

| I only saw Melissa Etheridge in concert for the first time a few years ago. I was so taken with her warmth, presence and power that I saw her again during the same tour. I saw her a third time this year when she performed many of these songs and that was the first time I heard them. The CD and the DVD are the next best thing to seeing her in concert. Her natural raw energy and emotion shine through in unbelieveable ways. Her passionate vocals hold nothing back, especially on "The Kingdom of Heaven" and "Open Your Mind." "What Happens Tomorrow" seems to be a sequel to her song for "An Inconveneint Truth." It is a true anthem. And "An Unexpected Rain", a song about making amends, is so full of aching it almost hurts to listen to it. But that's what makes her so unique. The added bonus is Philip Sayce on guitar, a brilliant and charismatic musician. |

Words cannot express the beauty of this DVD Submitted on: 2008-03-01 |

I don't know if I can say in words how much this CD/DVD set moves me. I've been listening to it for months and every time it hits me solidly in the heart. Thank Goddess that someone in the mainstream is FINALLY making music like this, with this subject matter and the intense power behind the message. Melissa is Awake and this is what she sings about here. She gets it.
I have written extensively in my blog and spoken about this album on my radio show (www.shapeshiftingonline.com), and still don't feel like I've said enough to recommend The Awakening Live to anyone and everyone. BUY THIS ... WATCH IT ... LISTEN TO IT ... BE CHANGED BY IT. |

Melissa Etheridge - The Awakening -Live - Having never been fortunate to see this legend live, the DVD of her concert at the Hard Rock Cafe was awesome. Having listened to the CD when it first came out I couldn't wait for the DVD and managed to purchase it through Amazon Prime.
Well worth adding to any collection of Melissa Etheridge. All I want now is for her to tour the UK! |
