 Artistic Expression Unveiled!

This is Janet's most innovative artistic sound ever bringing the entire listening experience as if riding on a space ship adventure where fantasies flourish, dreams ignite, and passions explode. The vibe is anything but imaginable as some tracks bring feelings of love gone with "Greatest X" then Janet admitting that she deserves "So Much Betta". There's "get romance" moods on full swing with "Discipline" very naughty but possibly a ride many have explored but not dared to talk about. This is classic Janet doing what she does best, bringing just a sparkle, a touch, and a sprinkle, then letting your thoughts and imaginations take over.
The music is open to the listeners own interpretation be it sweet and sensual or naughty but nice. This has R&B bounce, fast and mid-tempo as well as slow jams. For the best release I recommend the Japanese Deluxe Version since it has "Let Me Know", and "Feedback (Ralph Rosario Electroshok Radio)" + DVD viewable in the US. Either way, this release is phenomenal in bringing the new techno infused dance sound with funk, swagger, and sensuality all in one.
From the beginning tracks it is obvious that Janet put a concept in motion of making the entire experience very outer space with fantasies, and much "shock" at times to just fun sweet touches like in the songs, "Rock With U", "2Nite", and my favorite "Can't B Good". The last being a song relatable to many since the warning signs of love gone wrong ring like an alarm when the patterns are emerging all over and she sings, "This can't be good..." There's fun and flirtations tracks like "What's Ur Name", and "Feedback" both bringing positive vibes with bounce and rhythm-n-blues along dance technology.
The DVD is Janet Jackson explaining the concept behind the album, Feedback Video, the Dancers, Rehearsals, Photo Sessions, and of course the viewing of the actual video "Feedback". While many have spins of interpretations Janet explains the messages. The artistic creativity in the production is simply amazing!
Overall, the album is a great "get out of this real world" experience-- a definite fantasy to explore, imagine, and ride. Janet shows she can deliver vocally, artistically, and take risks! While not her Velvet Rope in messages or her past theme albums she introduces her new age concept quite strikingly!!! |

 Boring... her first one-star album

Discipline was a good title choice for this album since almost all the songs are disciplined into a boring sameness similar to an army of clones. Actually this album has only three songs: Feedback, So Much Betta and all the others which can't be distinguished either from these two or from each other.
"Feedback" is a good song, the first one in years that can be compared to Janet's "Control"-era hits. "So Much Betta" is very innovative, unlike anything she's ever done before. "Let Me Know", a Japanese bonus track has a good beat. The rest are fillers, even the racy lyrics can't save them, after all, those are nothing new from Janet. Never thought I'd give a Janet Jackson album only one star, but I had to. It's time for her to go back to Jam & Lewis, without them she is just another generic R&B star. |

Truthfully, Janet Jackson is like Madonna for alot of people(plus their alwys being compared to each other). They go in and they come out. Janet Jackson hasn't been a super star artist since i was in junior high, and sadly, shes never going to have that much attention,again. I didn't even know she released two albums, since the super bowl incident. I listened to them and they both sounded like complete crap(to put it nicely). A few tracks on 20 are ok. So when MTV actually put her on their for like the first time in 8 years, i was skeptical. They were like listen to this album.
I gave it a chance, and i loved it. The beats were really out of this world. I thought it was great. I think Feedback should have been a bigger hit, even she did slightly come back into popularity with it. (top 20 US). I thought the video was hot, and it's really her best stuff since the Late 90's from when i was a kid. Her follow up single was a little boring and generic. But the video was pretty good. She really has done a great job with this album. She has produced some great music with this album. You will not be disappointed. |

After I saw in the paper today that Janet was launching a lingerie line, I was just irritated enough to come here to write a review of "Discipline". Too late--Terry Mesnard has just about taken every word out of my mouth. I would add to what he wrote that Janet was at her best when she was addressing social issues and laying down fierce, hard tracks.
With "Janet" she shed her clothes and inhibitions--bravo for you Ms. Jackson--I always thought you might be harboring the need to get just a little nasty! Then "The Velvet Rope" took that a step further and I was wowed by the funk party she threw. Since then I've felt that she has gone the way of Mariah Carey in the "make the world my gynecologist" department. Pretty much every song has to have that "I Feel Love" vibe to it. Ok Janet, we get it, you're sexually liberated--MOVE ON!
Say what you will about Madonna--and don't forget, Janet did have her say about Madonna's sexually explicit material--but Madonna did at least have a point to make with all of her sexually in-your-face moments. Janet and Mariah are just sexual in the "Look at me, I'm a butterfly, moth, whatever--dancing in the flames of love, making shadows on the wall...la, la, la!" Ok--we get your point--NEXT!
There might be a reason Janet's been on such a slippery slope with her career for the last several years--it all sounds and looks like rehash--hardly anything she does doesn't sound familiar like you might have heard it on one of her other albums. Even in her videos she has the look of someone who is only concerned with all that is superficial--even the way she looks smacks of overproduction. And, if I hear her tell me another nickname she had as a kid or call out the names of her friends in another song...don't even get me started on those "I'm sick of them by the second listen" interludes! Doesn't she have anything to say about "the state of the world today" anymore...or are her sexuality and physical perfection the only things that are on her mind? And then there are all of those lip-synced performances, which really irritate me when you've paid the purchase price to see a show--be it live or on dvd. Having a little help is one thing, but when your mouth doesn't even move with the sound--please!
I haven't given up on her, but she better find a new groove if she ever wants to be as relevant as she once was. I know the girl still has a care for something in the world besides sex, and that there's probably still a slammin' album in her somewhere, but this mess ain't a workin'!!! |
