FABULOUS RELEASE - GREAT TRIBUTE TO A GREAT ARTIST Submitted on: 2009-08-10 |
|
| My CD of Gale's first two albums arrived today, and I am totally thrilled. In her memory (she passed away on July 27 at age 87), I wanted to see what Jasmine did to tracks I have recently downloaded from iTunes, which appear to be an almost complete set of Gale's Dot recordings. Jasmine has recreated two album classics in brilliant sound. These songs never sounded better. Regardless that they are monophonic, the remastering is so superb, you don't notice. The clarify of the vocals and orchestrations sound like they were recorded today. I'm very pleased Jasmine took the initiative and released these great Gale albums, and hope they continue to release the balance of her catalog on Dot, including all the B-sides (A Little To Late, the B-side of "Dark Moon" is one of my personal favorites). I cannot wait to hear "Dark Moon" and "Love By The Jukebox Light" in crystal clear sound like this. Any fans of 1950s female vocalists, Gale Storm herself or great standards should not pass this one up. |

Intriguing Submitted on: 2009-07-21 |

| When Randy Wood brought the T.V. favorite Gale Storm to Dot Records he thought she might have a chance at some hits. He had no idea she'd sail right into a long string of Top 10 hits, virtually all them quickly-done covers of promising new releases by other artists. Wood hadn't even thought about albums for Storm yet when the record distributors and public began clamoring for an L.P. With no time for some big, grand project he just had her pick her favorite songs and that was the album. Again, because of public demand, he put her first three hits on the L.P. in an era when singles and albums were marketed separately and served different purposes. He put a quickly-shot photo of Gale on the cover and a hit album was born. "Sentimental Me" was what the first album was supposed to have been, a beautiful concept album of famous standards from the 20s and 30s mostly. With a killer studio portrait on the cover. Put together these two albums provide a delightful experience from a singer who was highly individual and innately melodic. As for Gale's short recording career, her husband thought she and Wood were getting too close. They weren't but Gale (that would never be Gale's style...she was all about home, family and church) decided her marriage was more important than a recording career and she just walked away from it. Quite a lady. |

My Little Margie, RIP Submitted on: 2009-07-13 |
|
Gale Storm (Josephine Cottle) passed away a couple of weeks ago. I suppose that every young boy has a vicarious crush on some female celebrity, and I may as well confess that she was mine. She probably hadn't crossed my mind in 45 years. Where does time go? I did her bio page for Find a Grave, and learned something I didn't know, namely that she had a recording career in the mid-'50s, preceded by several years of vocal training. So, I bought this in memory of bygone days....
And, guess what? My Little Margie could SING!! Her career behind the mike was not (just) a pretty girl cashing-in on TV fame. She had a #2 hit in '55 with "I Hear You Knockin'" (country?), and followed with more. She cut a couple of albums, and those are what we have here. Style? Probably "pop" or "easy listening" would work, though one or two cuts sound "country" (and she was from Texas). Jazz? Not really. Cabaret? Maybe. There are 26 tracks, and every one a winner...no point in my going into details, as most will be familiar to anyone old enough to want this, and you can check the listing page, anyway. "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes", "Memories Are Made Of This", and "Anytime" are special. REALLY.
The production and sound are quite good. Late mono (which is probably better than early stereo). Miss Storm had kind of a short record career, which, as good as she was, I can't understand. She had some problems after her TV career, but beat them thru Him Who is the source of all redemption. This CD is a real treasure; grab it if you can find it!!. Eight Stars. |

Gale Storm Albums on CD At Long Last! Submitted on: 2008-06-03 |
|
| This set contains 2 of the greatest albums ever made for the first time officially on cd. Gale Storm was enormously popular in the 1950's as a pioneer on television with her television series MY LITTLE MARGIE (at its height number 2 in the ratings) and THE GALE STORM SHOW: OH! SUSANNA (also a big hit in the ratings). Between the series she began an enormously successful singing career. 4 of her early hits are included here in this set that has her first 2 albums: GALE STORM and SENTIMENTAL ME. One of the things that made Gale such a great singer was her ability to take a popular song of the day and not merely do a cover of it, but make the song truly her own. Among many examples is MORE THAN YOU KNOW. It is lovely song and there have been many fine versions of it by some of the most noted pop singers of all time. Still Gale's version is unique. She does it in a different tempo and arrangement than it is usually done, yet it is so perfect for her singing style and personality. Rarely have singer and song been so perfectly matched. She also makes the other songs in this collection truly her own. Not only does she have a lovely voice but she uses her abilities as an actress to convey emotion and personality into her singing as few others can. Her ability to do so many different kinds of songs is also amazing. These are two truly unforgettable albums and worthy additions to anyone's collection. (Note there are 2 numbers not on the original Dot albums included here: A HEART WITHOUT A SWEETHEART and MY HEART BELONGS TO YOU) At last we can hear them in even better sound on CD. |

Gale's first two albums on one cd...PLUS Submitted on: 2008-04-13 |
|
| As a long-time Gale Storm fan I welcomed the release of her first two albums on cd. The sound quality on this release is incredible! Although recorded in mono, the sound is so crisp and full you could almost swear Gale is in the room with you. The songs on this set include some of her big hits: "I Hear You Knocking", "Memories Are Made of This", "Teenage Prayer", and "A Heart Without a Sweetheart" (which wasn't on the original album). This is a fine example of 50s pop singing at its best. I'm in love all over again! |
