After a few times it got better Submitted on: 2009-06-30 |

| The first I heard of Firewind was the album Allegiance. At my first listen there were around three songs that stood out strongly, such as "Falling to Pieces" and "Deliverance" and the instrumental "Before the Storm." Then after several listens it hit me--these guys are impressive. While different sounding, the lead singer has manly and melodic vocals similar to Zach Stevens (ex-Savatage/Circle II Circle) with a style of singing more on par with Rob Rock (Impellitteri). But he has more grit in his voice then both of them. The guitarist is clearly joining the ranks of other guitar heroes. Concerning the album Premonition: To me, it is similar to Allegiance in that it takes a few listens to appreciate it. The initial two stand out songs are "Mercenary Man" and "My Loneliness." The only song that really didn't work for me musically was "Maniac"--I just couldn't get the original song out of my head. Admittedly, they make that cheesy song sound much better than the original... but come on man! That song is just awful :-). Everything else flowed together similarly to Allegiance, even when they start to sound like thrash, it manages to sound skillful and melodic in a manner that covers up the dry thrash sound. I was able to get into Allegiance quicker and perhaps, arguably, it is a little "better" than Premonition. But we are talking about music, which is a matter of taste. Cheers! |

In my top five for 2008 Submitted on: 2008-12-15 |

I came across Firewind when browsing for new power metal bands on Amazon, and got this cd after checking out a couple of their songs. My ideal metal album is edgy, but chock full of hooks, and The Premonition delivers on both counts. Much has already been said about Gus G- I'll just add one comment: so many virtuoso guitarists just try to dazzle us with their speed and technical ability- I don't think anyone since Slash has churned out leads that FIT THE SONGS better than Gus. A guitar solo should be the climax of the song- for confirmation that this guy is a master check out the crushing solo after the bridge on 'My Loneliness'.
I checked out some videos of keyboardist extraordinaire Bob Katsionis on YouTube, which I encourage you to do if you're interested in this band- wow. I'm impressed with the fact that he plays rhythm guitar too. Mark Cross is a phenomenal drummer, check out the fills at the beginning of the chorus to 'Angels Forgive Me'. Can't say much about Petros Christos' bass playing except it's solid- he seems to be the dark, mysterious member of this band (good look...haha). And finally I've become a big fan of Apollo Papathanasio's strong voice- it's tough enough for the metal songs, soft enough for the ballads and bridges, and I dig his slight Mediterranean accent.
To sum up, this album (and Allegiance too) has the perfect combination of elements: strong, hooky songwriting, stellar musicianship, powerful vocals, and crystal clear production that dares you to turn it up one more notch. One of my favorite albums of 2008. |

First try Submitted on: 2008-08-31 |
|
| This is my first try with Firewind. Preview songs from the different albums have left me guessing whether or not to try them. It's not a bad album, but I was disappointed to find out that a metal band would cover "Maniac" from "Flashdance"! When the song came on, I was almost embarrassed. If they had beefed up the vocals to a metal sound, they might have gotten away with it. Other than that, the album is fine. |

Not as good as the last album??? Submitted on: 2008-08-20 |

| No, it's even better. There is no one out there jamming like these guys today. Just in your face metal chock full of melody and guitar madness. These guys have really hit their stride. This album is SO listen-able. Ok, that's not a word but you get the idea. This CD kicks righteous butt. |
