The Welsh pop-soul sensation-on-the-rise Duffy, has caught a major break through to mainstream audiences abroad with her first full length release Rockferry, and for good reason. The album opens with the Titanic sized grand piano riff of the title track which is immediately followed by Duffy's powerful, soul shaking vox sounding like they are reverberating off the walls an empty music hall. The track builds to an empowering, climactic reprise chorus that should be enough to entice even the skeptic into letting the disc play out. From there, the nine other links in this chain seem to be welded with equal precision and gleaming with a fresh coat of chrome. The success of Rockferry has sparked some controversy within the music business, namely because Duffy's singing style so easily falls on skeptical (or in some cases, envious) ears as a blatant Amy Winehouse rip off. Singer-songwriter Alison Goldfrapp said "while Duffy has a great voice, she was trained to sound essentially like Amy Winehouse as part of a business plan." British hip hop singer Estelle criticized Duffy for misrepresenting genuine soul music. Duffy partially agreed with the criticism in that she is not trying to "define" soul music, but disputed the assertion that race should be an issue. In my opinion the similarity between Duffy and Winehouse is uncanny, and assuming that Winehouse's mega-success played no role in paving the way for another white, female soul star is naive. However, Rockferry expresses a distinctly different flavor of british girl power that is a cutsie PG version of heartbreak compared to Winehouse's rowdy, alcoholic antics. Nevertheless the girl's got soul, and Rockferry rocks. - Tyler Starkey

A good album...just not an original one Submitted on: 2009-10-29 |

| Duffy's debut album, "Rockferry" was released shortly after Amy Winehouse's success in 2007. Since then, labels left and right have been trying to find the next Amy Winehouse. Enter Mercury Records and their signing of Duffy. While the Winehouse comparisons are inevitable, I will say that's not a fair comparison. She's more like a melanin deficient Deniece Williams. In fact, "Rockferry" sounds a lot like Deniece's 1981 album, "My Melody", the 60's inspired album that was produced by The Stylistics producer Thom Bell. Duffy's songs "Warwick Avenue", "Delayed Devotion", and "Hanging On Too Long" sound like they could have been outtakes from that album. As much as I wanted to give her five stars, I just couldn't bring myself to do it for that reason. Hopefully, on her next album, she can establish her own identity. |
