This album ruined My Morning Jacket for me Submitted on: 2009-08-31 |

| The lyrics are the worst element to this album. In past releases Jim James crafted clever lyrics with his music, here he sings lyrics that would flow well on a Miley Cyrus Cd. |

| I can't believe this album is rated so highly, it sounds like Kenny Loggins. If you take that as a compliment, purchase away, but save for the amusingly Bee Gee inspired title track, this album is as middle-brow as it gets. |

The Buzzkill of 2008 Submitted on: 2009-07-12 |

One thing that always confuses me about bands is if they make something genius and amazing and sooner or later make something horrid. The later Beach Boys albums are a good example. It's like, if they had the talent to write something like Pet Sounds, then why did they allow themselves to write material as awful as their later work? I guess some bands just lose it, or maybe they conform to the masses, I dunno.
But it seems that My Morning Jacket has fallen under this same syndrome. Before this album, I was calling them one of the best bands working today. Z was a complete and total masterpiece; it's one of the few albums I can listen to front-to-back without wanting to skip a single second. It was arguably the most creative music being made, and the songwriting was amazing. It had ambition and scope, it was truly an epic. That couldn't be more opposite from Evil Urges; gone are the spacey soundscapes that made you think you were in another universe; gone is the intricate and original songwriting. The best word to describe Evil Urges is: commercial. Most of these songs sound like they were tailor made for country rock radio, except for a certain track called Highly Suspicious; I have no idea were that belongs, but it's nevertheless horrible, as I don't think the band has it in them to write a worse song than that. And since when has Jim's voice been this nasally?
I really should give this 1 star because of the gigantic drop in quality, but I'll be generous and give this 2 stars, because there's always a chance for My Morning Jacket to come back, and once again be one of the best bands working today. But for now, I personally leave this in the dustbin of My Morning Jacket's catalog. |

| My Morning Jacket's "Evil Urges" was an album that I had been looking forward to for a very long time. When I heard the first song they released online (touch me i'm going to scream pt. 2)... i thought to myself "what happened?" I still bought the album they day it came out and immediately went to listen. When i was done...i GOT it. it just made sense to me how it all fit into place. My other jacket fans that i suggested the album to hated it...all of them. I was still a believer in Jim James and didn't give up. We went to see them in Columbus on Oct 6th. The live performances of the new songs blew them and myself away. there is so much involved in this album that can go unheard if you listen to it with the mindset of "this isn't It Still Moves" . Patrick's drumming is amzing throughout the album and carl and jim both lay down some nasty licks. Also some of the bass lines that two tone tommy plays are really impressive. Buy this album and listen to it as its own entity, its not At Dawn, Z, or any other album...Its evil urges and it aint hurtin nobody |
