"ME AND 9TH ARE THE ASHFORD AND SIMPSON OF THIS RAP...
Submitted on: 2009-05-05
When I first heard that Jean Grae was teaming with 9th Wonder, I thought this is what hip hop needs. 9th is one of my favorite producers and Jean is an underrated, underground artist who is one hit away from being great. In the past I have been skeptical of female rappers. They either were too hard (Boss, Da Brat) or too raunchy (Lil' Kim, Foxy Brown, Jackie O). And the ones I did like (Eve, Remy Ma) didn't stick around long enough. What separates Jean Grae from the others is not only lyrics, but the ability to tap into all the areas without being pigeon-holed into one.

"Jeanius" proves she should be in a class all by herself. If its lyrics you want, she is at her best on "#8". You want sexiness listen to "Love Thrist". You wanna party, then "Think About It" is what you need. Not too many rappers (male or female) will get as personal as Jean does on "My Story". In it she talks about her life, going through an abortion and even attempting suicide. It shows she is human and goes through the same things many people struggle with everyday. The gems of this CD are "The Time Is Now" Ft. Phonte of Little Brother, "#8" and "This World". I like the whole CD, even though I wish it would've ended on a higher note than "Smashmouth".

9th Wonder supplies the perfect compliment to Jean Grae's pin-point lyrics. The only problem I have is that sometimes Jean is rhyming faster than the beat and sometimes doesn't find the rhythm . The CD covers pay homage to better days in hip hop. With this CD, Jean Grae proves that hip hop is not dead. It's just harder to find.
ON POINT!!!!!!

The CD was all love I had some joints off mix joints but the whole joint has foundation.
Off the hook - together they are a force to be reckoned with!

When i purchased this disk - I wasn't prepared for what I got. I knew any beats by 9th wonder would be head bangers - but the lyrics were just as memorable.

Worth full value as so few cd's are these days.
Finally, Jeanius has arrived!

With Jean Grae on Talib Kweli's Blacksmith Label, fans doubted whether Talib would be able to release the much downloaded Jeanius album. Thankfully, he came through. With producer 9th Wonder on most of the tracks, Jean doesn't dissapoint lyrically.
ridiculously dope

I reviewed a few other Jean releases on here, and as always she doesn't disappoint. Which next to no artists with more than 2 albums could claim. 9th Wonders beats are tight, lyrically Jean is as sharp as ever. She is able to go from humorous punchlines to some dark and depressing ish in a blink of an eye. "Don't Rush Me" is a simply amazing song about a female who has an abortion and is battling over her feelings of regret. Jean is amazing at painting a picture with words. The song makes me think and I can't help but wonder if it's really just a song, or is she talking about herself? The opening lines "f I could swim a thousand lakes to bring your life back I'd write that, but infinity can't rewind facts" Very haunting. Weather she's speaking from personal experience or not, the song is very sad and powerful as hell.

She can spit battle raps, she can tell vivid stories, she can go deep. Her flow is effortless and beautiful. There are too many good songs on here to really go into detail - unless I was to write a 5 page review. I will just use the song about abortion as an example of how incredible this lady is.

I want to give this 4 1/2 stars, I don't think it deserves 5, but it deserves more than 4! I've heard rumors she's retired from the rap game - I HOPE this isn't true! If it is we lost one of the best. Jean if you read this and you put the mic away, COME BACK! Hip-Hop needs your presence.
