One of the best metal albums of all time! Submitted on: 2009-09-29 |

Occasionally you will hear a song that is so good, you wouldn't mind listening to it three more times in a row. It's very, very rare for a band to have more than one song this good on a single album, and virtually unheard of for the entire album to be like this; Holographic Universe is one of these albums.
Scar Symmetry is a melodic death metal band from Avesta, Sweden, and they are not well known outside Europe. It would be a huge mistake to judge Scar Symmetry on their lack of popularity, however, as the band's creativity and imagination are equal to or greater than the most famous metal bands. Guitarists Jonas Kjellgren and Per Nilsson are musical geniuses; every guitar riff on Holographic Universe is both catchy and complex, ranging from melodic and epic to heavy and intense. Vocalist Christian Älvestam is as talented as they come, showcasing some of the best singing/growling combinations that can be found in metal today. The vocals do not follow the rhythm exactly, but complement it perfectly: you'll feel compelled to sing along with every song.
The subject matter contained in the Holographic Universe's lyrics is also very intriguing. Scar Symmetry's primary lyricist (and drummer) Henrik Ohlsson, explores the scientific theories of quantum physics and space-time with a superb mastery of the English language. They nature of the lyrics corresponds ideally with the inventiveness and intricacy of the music itself, making Holographic Universe the perfect album for the "thinking man."
Unless a person enjoys no metal/rock softer than Cannibal Corpse or harder than Coldplay, it's virtually impossible to dislike Holographic Universe. Simply for sheer imagination, the album has to be one of the best metal albums of all time. If that doesn't seem likely, look up a few Scar Symmetry songs on Youtube or a similar website and you'll quickly change your mind. |

| I will start of by saying that I love this album. If you like screaming and singing together you will not find a better cd. I have nothing but love for this band. One of the few metal cds that I don't get tired of listening to all the way through. Great job Scar Symmetry! |

Quintessential melodic death metal of 2008 Submitted on: 2009-02-01 |

| Simply put, this is my favorite album of 2008, and its mostly due to former vocalist Christian Alvestam's ability to bring his majestic vocals made up of both harsh and clean styles, whichbring to life the complex melodic melodic death metal riffs brought forth seemlessly by his bandmates. Holographic Universe truly brings some color to a saturated genre. |

Holy !@#$% Submitted on: 2009-01-12 |

| Wow! I mean, WOW! This album is absolutely incredible. The music is very well put together, the production is stellar, and the music plain out rocks. The guitarists are really good; not just chops-wise, but the complete songs. The singer blows me away. He has so much power and range. I prefer his singing on this album compared to the last one. If you love progressive-thrash-melodic-death metal, you will not be dissapointed with Scar Symmetry. Why do so many damn good bands come from Scandavia? |

I usually completely ignore Amazon's constant emails recommending new books and music, but for whatever reason I decided to listen to one song by Scar Symmetry, assuming, based on no previous knowledge of them, that I wouldn't like it. But boy was I wrong! I bought the album after only hearing "Morphogenesis" and then found out that it's not even the best song on there! Every song is amazing, and, being a Soilwork and In Flames fan, I agree strongly with the other reviewer who mentioned something along the lines of "this is the direction Soilwork and In Flames should've moved in instead....." I have been a fan of melodic metal for a decade now and this might be the ultimate blend of brutal growls, beautiful melodies, and stunning guitar-work. I was a huge fan of Fear Factory back in the day, and so I like the futuristic-sounding synths utilized throughout the album, though this might sound a little over-the-top to some metal purists. I'd have to say my favorite tracks are the title track, an epic masterpiece of metal, and the final track, "Ghost Prototype II." If their previous two albums are half as good, I'll be buying them ASAP!
So what's the catch? Well, it appears that the lead singer left, and it will be some extremely large shoes to fill in terms of balancing a huge vocal range and some Opeth-like screams with equal aplomb.
I can't recommend this album enough so buy it! |
