Enter the mind of Musiq Soulchild Submitted on: 2009-11-02 |

| Musiq Soulchild's album "Onmyradio" is a complete departure from his previous efforts, and that was intentional according to him. While he is a neo-soul artist, he felt that tag also limited him. So he made a concerted decision to branch out and expand his sound, something he did in moderation on his previous album, 2007's "Luvanmusiq". On this new album, he blatantly takes a stab at contemporary R&B. Almost half the tracks are done by Warryn Campbell, a guy who almost never worked with a neo-soul artist (he does the best track on here, the song "Until"). The other half is handled by Musiq's longtime collaborators, Ivan "Orthodox" Barias & Carvin "Ransum" Haggins, who are responsible for the Mary J. Blige duet, "Ifuleave". The song "Sobeautiful" sounds like the best song Earth, Wind & Fire never wrote. The album's first single- the title track that threw everyone off- is the closer and frankly isn't really that bad. While the album is great, the only complaint that I have about it is that it's not available on vinyl, unlike his first four albums. What's that about, Musiq? |

On My Radio Submitted on: 2009-10-11 |

Musiq continues to be one of my favorite young male r&b artists. Although he doesn't have the purest vocals at times you can hear the passion in his voice whether he's singing live or on 'wax'. He definitely has carved out his niche in the genre and hasn't gone off on "pop" tangents like so many other artists in an attempt to widen his audience. I believe he knows and appreciates r&b AND moreso, his audience so although he tried to smooth his songs out on recent releases he always seems to keep a balance so that there are true classics mixed with trendy tracks on his albums.
The other really great thing about Musiq's music is that he works so well with Philly producers, Carvin Haggins & Ivan Barrias. These gentlemen really seem to "get" Musiq as an artist and together the three of them have created many memorably beautiful tracks.
My standout tracks are:
IF U LEAVE f/ Mary J Blige - although the music production is really close to TEACH ME, this is a beautiful duet with two of my favorite r&b artists. It's another trademark "Musiq" ballad featuring realistic & relatable lyrics.
SOMEONE - heartfelt beautifully penned ballad on which he details the kind of woman he's searching for
SO BEAUTIFUL - I love this song but melodically it reminds me a little of Raheem DeVaughn's single, YOU.
RADIO - although a poor lead single choice, I really like this track - it's so much fun seeing him perform it live with the audience participation!
BACK AGAIN - loved the "human beat box" sample, makes this track fun to listen to
UNTIL - loved the use of the Marvin Gaye sample
DEAR JOHN - Musiq's vocals are fantastic on this break-up track
On a personal note, I was a fan who was taken aback by the release of RADIO as tge lead single and didn't quite know what to expect of the album. I buy Musiq's albums on auto-pilot and this single caused me to hesitate slightly before making the purchase because I wasn't sure if he was switching up his whole style but then some marketing genius released IF U LEAVE and I was back on board.
I'm happy with the music and for having made the purchase. I'm also happy for Musiq that given the current climate in the music biz, he has been able to sustain his career while other similar artists are being tossed out by labels. |

A MUST HAVE!!!! Submitted on: 2009-05-30 |

| This is Musiq's best album. As a long time fan I can definitely see his maturity. Songs like Ifuleave, Deserveumore, Loveofmylife, Moneyright, Someone, Iwannabe & Sobeautiful really show his appreciation and respect for women and I am completely in love with it. The whole album from beginning to end is just so HOTT. You will NOT be disappointed in getting it. If you are a true R & B lover this is the album for you. I am telling everyone I know to get it. |

3 1/2 stars, but great. I'm willing to listen to whatever is on his radio Submitted on: 2009-05-22 |

Musiq Soulchild has always been more mature than most of his contemporaries, namely when it comes to his lyrics. The subjects he sings about are just what women want to hear uttered from the male species. Songs such as "Love", "Justfriends" and Dontchange" are perfect examples. His lyrics are so sincere and beautiful, any mature woman can't help but appreciate his lyrics. I have enjoyed all of his albums and "OneMyRadio" is definitely no exception. This is a fine work, complete will the infusion with all types of music like R&B, gogo, reggae and soul.
Musiq chooses some great artists to collaborate with such as the fantastic Mary J. Blige and the incredible Damien Marley. Musiq and Mary collaborate on a track entitled "Ifuleave" and while it is not my favorite moment on the album, the fact that two extremely talented artists came together and did a song is enough for me. There are lots of piano, bass and drum found on this track and both artists do very well. The hook is nice, also. Musiq tries his luck with reggae on the song that features Damien, "Iwannabe." Musiq knows just who to work with; they do a fine job. I like almost everything Damien does anyway. In this song, the guys are telling their new women that they want to be in their lives for more than a day or two. Great subject matter! One of my absolute favorite tracks is a ballad called "Someone." I had this song on repeat for a while! He does a fine job with the delivery and the lyrics are so touching.
If you are looking for an R&B album that speaks on almost every area of relationships and an album that is a bit different, please pick "OnMyRadio" up. Sure, it has the classic Musiq Soulchild sound, but he tries to be innovative on a few tracks, and doing that worked in his favor.
