Well played and sung Blues CD from Mr. B.B. King Submitted on: 2009-07-24 |

Superb singing and immaculate playing from Mr. B.B. King. Powerful sound from the whole band and Mr. King's guitar playing beautiful and clear.
Most of the songs are low tempo. Not so upbeat as Blues on the Bayou. But a strong powerful Blues CD nevertheless. I would like to hear live performances in front of an audience of these songs. I find B.B. King' s live CD' s very exciting and full of energy so I am curious to hear how these songs on One Kind Favor will sound in front of an audience.
This CD is well performed. |

ONLY HIS AGE CAN EXCUSE THIS LAME OFFERING Submitted on: 2009-06-25 |

You can either say "wow, that is awesome for an 83 year old" or you can be honest and say that it is a shame that this cd had to be released. B B is much better than this ( or at least WAS ). This incredibly lame cd does absolutely nothing for the BB legend. He was never a speed merchant and it was all about the tone and that killer vibrato. Coupled with his emotive voice, he was one of the best BLUES man out there. The voice is still OK, but there is just no fire left for these covers.
If this is your first exposure to BB, you might well ask what all the fuss is about. The singing is listless and the guitar playing is like a caricature of the great BB. It might well be the best cd ever by an 80 someting, but that's all it is. Against any of the comparable BLUES players, this just does not cut it. The appaling sound quality often mentioned elsewhere, was most probably an attempt by the producer to add some VINTAGE feel to the recording and to muffle some of the more average notes that pass for solos on this release. I have seen BB LIVE on at least 4 occasions and the man was a giant. This release just screams "WRING THE LAST DROP OF CASH OUT OF THIS ANCIENT MASTER" Before he can't do it any more ( which really is about now ). |

B.B. King and T-Bone Burnett's Blues Gem! Submitted on: 2009-05-08 |

One Kind Favor is an absolute treat of a CD from B.B. King. My introduction to B.B. King was his appearance with U2 on the single "When Love Comes To Town" on Rattle and Hum, and I've enjoyed his music ever since. With a recording career that spans over 50 years and at 82 years of age you might be concerned that his tank is empty. I am pleased to report that this could not be further from the truth.
One Kind Favor is actually a step forward compared to some of his work over the last 10 plus years. Part of the credit for this must go to Midas touch producer T-Bone Burnett (who is the mastermind behind Raising Sand too). Burnett's selection and arrangement of songs has coaxed an absolute gem from King. The opening track is a cover of Blend Lemon Jefferson's "See That My Grave Is Kept Clean". It has a blues shuffle rhythm that calls to mind the little known but no less great Willie Nelson song "Darkness On The Face Of The Earth" from Teatro. The rest of the instrumentation and the lyrics are completely different, but the similarity to the underlying rhythm is striking. In addition to Burnett, another key element in the secret sauce of this CD is Dr. John on piano along with a full horn section. Darrell Leonard's horn arrangements add a touch of jazz to the sound too.
However, all of this is window dressing at the end of the day. If you are considering a B.B. King CD there are two things that you are looking for. You will find these on One Kind Favor. B.B. King still plays Lucille with a skill not betrayed by age. While King's voice shows a few signs of being long in the tooth, it is still incredibly strong. He still has that powerful growl as evidenced on songs such as "Waiting For Your Call" and "My Love Is Down".
Overall, One Kind Favor is a great CD. If you didn't know better, you would never believe that it is the work of someone in his eighties. This is a must have for all blues fans.

Wonderful blues, unbelievably bad sound Submitted on: 2009-04-02 |

| It is a crime for one of the greatest artists of our age to have his talents so dishonored by such an incredibly bad recording. This is one of the worst-sounding albums I have ever heard, and I have been a hi-fi buff since my teens in the 1960's (and also worked in the hi-fi field back in my college days). Particularly execrable is the bass: tubby, thuddy, muddy. The rest of it sounds like an MP3 on really cheap speakers. I found myself wondering if the recording engineers and producers were teenagers or twenty-somethings who grew up thinking great sound was downloads from the itunes store heard on earbuds. I'm sorry to rant, but this is outrageous. If you want to hear what properly-engineered-and-recorded blues sounds like, check out BB King's collaboration with Eric Clapton on "Riding with the King." |
