The way all music should be. Submitted on: 2009-06-24 |

I'll make this short and sweet:
The tracks on this album are like hands that wrap around your soul, squeeze and tear it out and then shove it back in through your ears.
Not for the faint of heart, but highly recommended. |

Abstract art for the uninitiated ... Submitted on: 2009-06-16 |

... and to the untrained ear. Gojira's music is unmistakable and this is no small feat some 40 years after the genesis of metal. They have managed to refine a vibrant aesthetic completely their own, and remain singular. They simply do not collectively sound like anyone else though that's not to say none of their elements will not suggest other bands. Where The Link and From Mars to Sirius, however, had a much tighter and addicting flow to the music, this album seems like an abstract painting with sometimes TOO MUCH going on. It can make for a jarring listen to sit through in one setting because the band incorporates more of an ebb and flow to this album. It's truly inspiring to hear such accomplished skill in display but after several listens, i found with the shuffling of some of the tracks, a more consistent flow could have possibly disguised it.
All in all, the genius is here, but this time around, the indulgence seems a bit excessive, with a couple of tracks seeming oddly out of place, and if this trend continues, this great band just may achieve what they seek, minus the riches to captivate and scorch souls. After all, theirs was initially a nod more to death metal than prog-rock, which is where they're leanings lie on this round. A winner, nevertheless. |

near perfect Submitted on: 2009-05-27 |

| Pick this up. You won't be sorry. Gojira is one of the only bands to every really capture that riff or that one chorus that you wish would play on for so much longer than it does. They know it, they own it, they kill it. Plus this album has a guest appearance from Randy Blythe! |

Gojira Unleashed Submitted on: 2009-03-14 |

Gojira- interesting name for a metal band. It's how the Japanese originally referred to Godzilla. And speaking of which, this album at times sounds like it could be the soundtrack to a Godzilla movie, when he is wreaking havoc and destroying buildings and such.
I would describe this album as heavy, varied, and original. There is some technological audio manipulation on the vocals here and there, which is not too common in metal. That adds to it's originality. Every track is distinct. They slow it down on occasion, but the heaviness moves along at a good pace and pervades most of the album. And it's catchy...
"You have the power to heal yourself!!!" (track 9- Esoteric Surgery)
If you are a metal fan and you hear this album, guaranteed there will be something memorable about it that will stand out to you. Maybe one or two things, maybe everything. It's Gojira... RUN FOR COVER!!! |
